Reward bookings on the day?

Has anyone booked reward travel on the day with BMI, for the flight not just an upgrade?
Long story but I'm beginning to make contingencies should I miss my (non refundable/non changeable) connection from VS401. If it arrives on time I should be fine, but there is now only 1:40 between the arrival and departure times due to a change by VS (arriving 1:10 later than originally scheduled)
As they are seperate PNRs, neither airline will be obliged to help me out if the VS401 is late (won't be doing this again!). There is current availablity for reward travel on BMI later that day (12/4) or the following day, but I don't really want to book it now if I don't need to.
