BMI has decided not to take immediate advantage of the "Open Skies" agreement for transatlantic travel and instead is expanding its routes to the east. Story from the Times here.

Aren't those 'new' destinations the BMED routes that Bmi acquired after buying BMED?

Thanks,

Good point. Perhaps this story is putting a positive spin on a "do nothing" approach that comes from a reflective "wait and see" policy in respect of the impact of the Open Skies agreement; there's an earlier comment from the Times here that suggests this may be the case.

Yes Sarah tbey are.

BMI are holding back on new routes to the States as they are keen to concentrate on their existing routes.BMI are not well known in the States and they wish to promote heavily these key new(old BMED) routes first.

(well thats what i was told anyway!)

Cheers for the insights, Scorpio. It would certainly make sense to focus on these existing routes first i guess.

Thanks,

They have however placed an order for 5 additional A330s, the first to be delivered in spring. And these will be used to begin transatlantic routes from LHR some time in 2008.
