Anyone have a suggestion as to the best way to require a password to log into win98 from boot up as the built in one sucks,what im looking for is something that will lock the machine down unless the password is entered.

Btw..this is for a friend..I havn't used 98 since,well the 90's so have forgotten everything I knew about the OS..'cept for the bsod burnt on to the back of my eyes [:0]

If you want to lock the PC down you could allways put a passord on the BIOS start up ..

Yes I agree with Patrick. There are some dangerous 3rd party utils, but the safest and easiest is a bios password, backed up with a hdd password

A Windows 98 startup screen would protect it by itself, surely?


I know if I was trying to break into a computer, I'd walk right past that one. (Kind of like trying to steal a Metro... [:I])

The BIOS password would pretty much be useless, as their are published backdoors to get round them.

Yes the built in one is pants, jus thit the ESC key and you are done.

Why not use a password protected screensaver that kicks in at startup?

Or even better get a new OS..

This is a friends computer not mine,getting her through a bios password isn't even in the books and as you said the built in one sucks.

A new OS,well yes,but no,this is a PIII system and im not going through the headaches of putting XP on it.

Now a password protected screensaver,rememebering that 98 isn't my strong suit,is there a good free one to download?

Use Windows default screensaver. That will do the job.

I think the BIOS password is stronger than the Win98 screensaver. It's easy to get round the BIOS password if you can get internal access to the machine to reset the CMOS, but if the case is locked it's pretty good.

Otherwise, adding security to Windows 98 is like installing a mortice lock in a cardboard door.

A P3 system might run Win2k ok, which is far more secure. You can upgrade Win98 to Win2k.
