Does anyone use these, a colleague recommended http://www.carbonite.com to me ... be keen to know if it's good or of any alternatives?

Personally I'd use a physical backup system such as a hard disk and store it off-site.

At least you know exactly where it is and not at the mercy of a company that might go bust or quietly go through your data for any juicy titbits.

Thanks, I do that as well, but I'm on the move so much that when travelling a week's loss of files could be a big issue.

I'm just not happy backing up all my personal data online to a server somewhere I dont know or fully trust.

I know they all say it's safe but much rather look after the backed up data myself.

Much rather backup my data to a local network attached drive which I currently use.

Also what happens if you internet service goes down?

Slow UK internet upload speeds (only have the standard BT based 448K upload here) also mean these online backup services do take quite a long time and are going to take a large bite out of your monthly ISP data allowance.

Regards

Yes, I can see that flaw if you have a slower connection and an upload / download limit. I don't however.

I do like the automatic nature of these services, I've used remote SharePoint, Exchange and other data storage services before and have no issue with the security once due diligence is performed.

Slinks, you looked at Live Mesh at all? http://www.mesh.com - I'm not sure how I've managed without it to be honest, I can have my current work follow me round on my computers and I can also get to it via the web via a Live Desktop. And for the real killer bit, the ability to remote desktop to one of your PC's with one click - all the tunneling is taken care of. So I can get to my machine sat at home with one click, and its as if I am sat in front of it.

I am unable to use Livemesh:

In connection with the Live Mesh Tech Preview Service you will not upload, distribute, or otherwise use any content that:

incites, advocates, or expresses pornography, obscenity, profanity, hatred, or gratuitous violence.

Carbonite is good for what I have heard, somewhere I have a code that gets you a discount, I think it is for $50 a year unlimited storage and access, I am heading out the door right now, pm me so I remember and I will find it for you.

Edit: ok found the code (Mrs Scrooge still getting ready) the standard rate is $49.95 per year, use code 10OFF to get $10 a year off the rate.

I ended up going with Mozy for online backup - similar cost to Carbonite but seems to get better reviews.

I like the idea, when travelling, of keeping this constantly up to date.

Looked at LiveMesh, but as a technosimpleton I stayed on the KISS principle!
