Dixons are advertising 8gB Ipod touch's for 139 GBP, but don't say which generation.... Now, call me cynical but I have to wonder if they haven't put 3rd gen, it's because they're trying to flog off their old stock (as are Amazon). The 3g 8gB on Amazon go for about 189; what chance the Dixon's ones aren't 3G - and can you tell from the box when it's handed over what gen it is?

There is no new '8GB 3G' iPod touch, it's the old 2G model, but at a lower price. The 8Gb one is 130 at Dixons Tax Free. Link

The 16GB model that used to cost 219 has been discontinued, while the 32GB model has been reduced from 289 to 229, and theres a new 64GB model at 299.

Slightly OT and some useless info you never thought you needed to know....

You can tell exactly when iPods/iPhones were manufactured by looking at the serial numbers.

The third digit is the year and the forth & firth are the week number.
(the first 2 digits are the factory code and the last 6 are the unique identifier)

I know this works with iPhones and I think it's true for iPods too.

The problem is though it's not known how far in advance the new models where manufactured.

That is one good piece of trivia.

So my iPod was manufactured in the 48th week of 2007! [:D]

This is strange then, as Amazon is awash with descriptions of Ipod Touch items variously specifically described as 2nd and 3rd generation. I wonder why they'd do this as it's clearly not the case that there is a 3rd gen iTouch [?]???

Just to be clear - by 3g I'm referring to 3rd generation. Here's a link to the page on Amazon where you can find them (sorry - don't know how to the 'link here' thingy...

Link to Amazon.

Edit by mod to shorten link......Nick

Calling the 8Gb one '3rd Generation' is a bit of a con. It's a repackaged 2G with v3.1 software.

I'm sure it is a con, but do you see what I'm getting at? They are CLEARLY showing what they describe as 3rd generation iPod Touch's of 8, 16 and 32GB. How is one supposed to know that it's simply the same 2nd generation hardware with essentially a simple s/w update? That appears to be an out and out rip-off and deception[V].
