iPad - buying in the states

Has anyone purchased an ipad or iphone in the states and used it back home without any problems?

With the exchange rate as it currently stands they are much cheaper over there, but I want to make sure it would work ok back here?

Anyone help please?

Of course the I Pad will work over here without any problem - going for the I Phone may be a false economy.

Thanks buns, my mum wants an ipad and I thought i'd look into getting one in the states in March, knowing I'd seen them cheaper over there (plus with the 1.55 dollar rate at present).

I've told her to hold fire for the ipad 2 which is rumoured around April time but we'll see!

90% of my Apple purchases have been made in the US due to it being a damn lot cheaper - no problems with using them anywhere in the world!

Everything is OK apart from iPhones. AT&T ones are locked to AT&T and Verizon ones (launching next week) are CDMA and not GSM, so wont work anywhere other than in the US or China.

I dont think you can buy an AT&T iPhone without a contract through the official channels.

Another one here for buying an ipad in the states and it working fine back in the UK.

I bought a wifi & 3G model, and once home called orange who sent out the micro sim for the ipad. All very straight forward.

You don't mention where you're going in the States, but if you're going to NYC, then my advice would be to go to Tekserve rather than the apple store. http://www.tekserve.com/

It's on west 23rd St, and is much quieter than any of the apple stores, and therefore the service is most likely to be much better. All there stock is the same price as the apple store too.

Go to the new Apple Store on W14th and 9th in Chelsea - a lot quieter than than the others due to be slightly off the tourist trail!

Dont forget to include the city & state sales taxes as these are added on, unlike over here, to the shelf price. In NYC it is 8.875% and 8.1% in Las Vegas.

Check Amazon.com too as some states dont impose on-line sales taxes but do for physical purchases.

What's the price in the US compared with the UK? Haven't looked at iPad's so far, but now starting to look. I'm over in the US a lot so if the difference is enough I'd probably do it.

Got mine in Miami last april and so far it's not missed a beat. If the iPad2 comes out shortly I'm thinking of getting one of those in LA in May.

Just for comparison. I paid ~£356 for my US 16 Gb WiFi iPad, compared to £439 current UK price.

All Apple charging bricks (iPad, iPod, Mac etc) come with removable country specific plugs so you just buy a UK one when you get home. Apple stores sell them. You then just slide off the US 2 pin plug and push on a UK 3 pin plug. If you already have an Apple device, you will probably already have one somewhere.

There's also Dixons at the airport. Prices seem to have been removed from their web site, but I can't imagine it's much of a saving.

Had a look in the Dixons Tax Free shops in LHR and MAN this morning, a few pennys over £399 for the basic model - compare to the prices posted by mitchja:

Definitely not worth buying yet - but I expect that the new version will be a similar price, and similar price differences depending on where/how you source it.

Lol I've only just managed to "sell" the ipad to my mum and she finally understands what it is, now I need to try and explain it's best to wait for ipad2 lol. I may not tell her and get the ipad2 when it;s out!
