I will be over in the Vegas around Christmas, and might well visit the mall with the real shops (none of the poker chips with name on it crap type of mall), and am wondering...

Buying a mobile over there (android or ios). I know it used to be completely different technology (CDMA rather than GSM), but might less likely now:

1) Are they likely to be 3G compatible?
2) Are they likely to be cheaper?
3) Are they often sim free, rather than tied to contracts.
4) Will buying a uk charger solve the charging problem?

I did used to have a shufty in Dixons on the way out, but in recent years its never provided anything cheaper than amazon.

I'm pretty certain you can't buy just an iPhone handset in the US, it has to be on contract, so that pretty much makes that a non starter (I do of course STBC on that).

Can't help with android -sorry, but as far as iPhones go you can now buy them from apple stores in the USA unlocked and SIM free, they started this back in June (just after we got back from holiday - typically)

16gb is $649
32gb is $749

Both prices exclude sales tax

My brother recently purchased an iphone 4 unlocked from the apple store in NYC - put his o2 mini-sim in on his return and worked with no issues.

The current £/$ rate does mean they work out quite a bit cheaper!

Plus the warranty is effective worldwide :)
