Asking the experts here ........

I need a new mobile for the US - pay as you go, with a data plan and cheap calling to the UK as well as UK mobiles.

Not too bothered about an upto date model.

In the US 3 or 4 times a year for 10 to 18 days at a time but quite a lot of usage when there.

What do you recommend ?

Thanks in advance

Hi David

I tend to us a T Mobile sim for my iphone whilst in the US, on Pay as go. The data side of things work really well and it's not too expensive. I tend to buy the sim via ebay and have the sim pre activated so I can let folk know the number before I go and can set up the online account for top ups.

regards

I use Metro PCS which runs on a month to month contract. It costs me about $60 for unlimited calls in the US and UK, also texts and Internet usage.

I am issued with a new number if there is more than a 3 month gap in my contract but all I do is use the same phone and text my new number to all my contacts.

I am in the US up to 6 months a year and so far found this the most convenient way.

If you have a smartphone check out apps like Call2 - there are others that work the same but basically you get local calling rates depending on how you register and use an app on your phone to make calls.

Buy a pentaband Nexus 4 and you can use it here too. I just pop in a Simple Mobile SIM when I'm over in the US.

Net10 - 10 cents per minute calling, 15 cents international (landline only) 5 cents per text (sent/received).

Sim only deals available - I pay $45 per month unlimited data, text and calls for the iphone.
