I wondered if anyone knew why VS seem to have changed the ARCID on their flights by putting a letter at the end of the usual flight a/c id. For example VS5 would normally show as VIR5. It has been showing as VIR5X. Same with other flights. im sure theres a simply explanation.
This question came up somewhere else recently - I believe the answer is simply so that where there may be more than one flight with a similar ID in the same airspace, such VIR5 or VIR15 an added letter just helps clarify each aircraft and communications.
There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

Slinky is correct - too many flights with similar flight numbers that could misheard by ATC and pilots.
For example early afternoon you have "Virgin five", "Virgin four five", "Virgin one five" and "Virgin seven five" all heading across the Atlantic.

I'm always listening to ATC at V.C Bird in Antigua and noticed this too lately.
The Virgin 33 as it was for so many years is now the "Virgin 33 echo"
