I've been following this quite some and yes it is damaging to Boeing, esp. after the test flight electrical problems, the United and Qatar electrical problems, the fuel pipe issue the FAA put out a notice about and the delays to the programme themselves. While it seems these are not all related to each other, it's beginning to be quite a catalogue of issues for such a new plane and a small active fleet. Added to that United's dispatch reliability of their 787s is reported to be very bad.

Hopefully this issue will be understood and resolved soon and by the time VS gets its 787s all these things will be ironed out.

Good article on Flight Global...

Essentially, JAL, LAN and UAL have all had somewhat related electrical issues with the 787.....an exploding battery, though, is concerning.

It's very fortunate this did not happen during the preceedding 12 hour flight...

Note: VS expects delivery of the 787-9 series next year. The problem is that Boeing did not start to make the 787-9 test model yet. With the current problems version 8 is having, Boeing has been silent about the production, testing and delivery of the 787-9. I suspect further delays are in store for the 9 series.

However Boeing said in its last news conference on this (November) that the 9 is ahead of schedule, the first planes will be flying by Autumn this year, and will be delivered to the first customer NZ on schedule in 2014???

Teething problems are only to be expected on a new aircraft model I guess, but thejse persistent electrical issues are a worry, and a battery fire is a very serious event.

Hope that Boeing takes prompt and focused action......which I'm sure they will.

Apparently there have also been problems with a cracked windshield and a brake issue this week - the FAA have ordered a review:

But VS said that it would take delivery of the 787-9 in 2013 so you know that's not going to happen.....
