Flying VS15 May 27th and usual issue with upgrades ...plenty of miles and eligible class of upgrade on the outbound but no available seats.. On return flight loads of seats but not in the right class to upgrade.. Do seats get released nearer the time or is it fairly random?? Is trying at the airport an option or can you only do it through flying clubs when you use miles?? Can anyone help... :D

Your flight looks rammed in UC, busy in PE and wide open in economy.
Release of upgrade opportunities by VS is completely random, at the whim of Revenue Management .
There are lots of examples on here where persistence and regular checking had paid dividends. Just keep trying.
You can certainly try again at the airport - the normal rules are sometimes ignored if they need to shift passengers up - they would often sooner take miles from you, than give a freebie op-up to someone else.

Good luck and keep checking.

You could phone up and see how much it would be to change the booking class of your return ticket to make it upgradable. Sometimes it's astronomical, sometimes it's quite reasonable, especially if the upgrade seats can be put on hold for you while it goes through.
