No doubt I'm doing something wrong here! The miles redemption chart on VA website for a round trip, off peak trip to Miami says that 115,000 miles are needed. https://www.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/fl ... ights.html

It says to halve that to get the one way cost, so 47,500. I'm only wanting a one way from MIA but when I go to book the cost is 70,000 miles. The date is definitely an off peak date. What am I doing wrong?

Oddly, it shows 70,000 miles for every date in February, except one date, the 27th Feb which gives the figure I was expecting of 47,500. Any ideas?

I'm seeing the same thing - though I think I see what's happening. The dates for 70,000 miles are showing as flights that include a connection with Delta - i.e. MIA-ATL-LHR which means there are two sectors involved and therefore more miles, because there's no availability on MIA-LHR direct. Booking Delta rewards via the VS site is a thing that's possible now :)

The Feb 27th date is the only one that has UC availability on the non-stop VS operated flight :)

Annoyingly, there doesn't seem to be a way to filter non-stop only, but that should explain!

Strikes me as odd though that, just because they're offering the same route albeit with a connection, that the miles price rises? I'm sure on BA the miles price remains constant, whether direct or indirect? There's a huge difference between the usual 47500 and 70000!

When I went to school (a long time ago) half of 115,000 was 57,500, not 47,500....

Thanks for correcting me Peter, I should have said 98,000 miles in my original post, not 115,000 (the latter being the peak figure for MIA) - hence one way MIA-LHR being 47,500.

I was just looking on BA to see what happens when they offer you an indirect option. Oddly, unlike VA, the miles needed actually drop! On a direct BA service MIA-LHR is the usual 62,500 Avios for Club World. However opting for indirect, on Iberia via MAD the cost drops to 55,250. Yet on VA for indirect on DL they up the miles needed from 47,500 to 70,000! I have the Avios so will be using BA instead!

One day I'll get it right ;) 95,000 is what the chart says - hence 47,500 one way - apologies!

I'm still gob smacked as to why VA impose an extra 32% for going indirect. I'd love to go VA, indeed I'd happily go DL indirect but not with such a dramatic price hike. This prompted me to look across the rest of the year, and some other routes, and believe it or not it's the same - with indirect DL typically being on offer costing a whopping third more :(
