Sorry if this has been asked before but can you book a reward seat one way and pay the regular fare return. I've found a reward seat on my outbound flight but nothing on return?

Unfortunately the combi fare, which allowed you to do just that, was abolished when VS switched to Delta’s booking system just over a year ago.

You can still do it but you’d have to make separate bookings for each leg and buy a full fare one-way ticket which is extortionate.

Keep checking for reward fares - they can and do appear at random. Or, if you can, try being flexible with dates and routes (eg SEA instead of SFO, MIA instead of MCO etc).

Thank you I was seeing the one way full fare and it was crazy. Cheaper to get an internal to JFK and come back on a reward fare from there.

Not all airlines apply silly loadings to one way fares. Some airlines price all legs the same and for a return they just sell you 2 one ways. These can be very useful to 'fill in' multi city trips or do as you are doing, act as the return to a one way reward booking.

WestJet, Norwegian, Icelandair and Tomas Cook spring to mind as likely options for a sensible one way quote. If you aren't in a rush, Icelandair also allow free stopovers of up to 7 days in Iceland. Who doesn't fancy a dip in the Blue Lagoon on the way home?
