Australian-listed Virgin Blue is planning to launch daily flights from Sydney to Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand (NZ). However, it rejected suggestions that it is planning to acquire a stake in the regional carrier, Origin Pacific Airways, as a way of entering the NZ aviation market. Instead, it confirmed that it is negotiating a codeshare agreement with Origin. On 17 December 2003, Virgin's Pacific Blue subsidiary said it will begin daily services between Sydney and NZ on 10 March 2004. This will be preceded by flights between Brisbane and Christchurch on 29 January. Flights between Melbourne and Christchurch are also scheduled to begin in early March. Pacific Blue's CEO, Tony Marks, said the airline is also considering flights to secondary airports in NZ, such as Napier, Invercargill and Dunedin.
