The Tasmanian pilot of a light plane involved in an incident with a Virgin Blue Airlines flight has defended his actions. Peter Scollard, a pilot with 30 years' experience, says there was never any risk of a collision. The Virgin Blue flight was descending into Launceston when an alarm in its cockpit sounded. Scollard's four-seat plane and the commercial jet were within sight of each other. Scollard said he was aware of the jet at all times, was monitoring it on two radio frequencies, and maintaining separation. Scollard noted that had his plane come within 60m of the commercial jet as reported, it would have been thrown out of the air from turbulence. Some elements of the aviation sector have wrongly used the incident in detailing their opposition to Australia's new airspace rules, Scollard noted.
