I've wondered how often people actually hurt doing this let alone killed.

It looks fun but is very risky.

I have stood against the fence on several visits to St Maarten and the jet blast is incredible to experience. However, there are warning signs everywhere so it is clearly understood to be at one's own risk. Other than a 747 with its tail virtually up against the fence which is very rare, I find it hard to understand how this sad event occurred.
