Non-hotel 10day stay in LA - good/bad areas around Hollywood

I have arranged via a friend for my daughter to do her work experience at a post-production studio in Hollywood and will be staying in LA with her while she does this (for 10 days) - the problem I now have is where to stay -we need 2 x rooms, so hotels become expensive, and something like Airbnb-style rental becomes attractive. Problem is I don't know the good from bad areas within a daily drive to Hollywood for a couple of weeks...

How can I work out the good/safe areas that I can drive from into Hollywood each day? Any good websites etc? Anyone have an apartment they'd like to rent me? :-D

Grateful for any suggestions on how to work this out.

Which part of Hollywood? Commuting is a nightmare but you might be better off a bit further out as much of tourist LA is pretty seedy out of hours and very commercialized and expensive.

I'd probably look at Los Feliz or Silverlake.
