Q: Which of the following is the Largest?

A - Peanut
B - Elephant
C - The Moon
D - A Kettle

Sorry - This is an email (complete with WWTBAM screen shot) doing the rounds at the moment, with the caption of "American woman goes home with $0" and the answer of "Elephant" hilighted.
But I reckon it is a common mistake. Like those cognitive experiment trick questions. In our minds the moon is about 1" across wen we look at it!

Interesting how emails change on their journey around the internet... the screen shot I have shows all 4 answers!

Perhaps they are suggesting she took the 50/50 first?

Reminds me of those Family Fortunes crackers that did the rounds a few years ago:

"Name something red"

"My cardigan"

"Name a dangerous race"

"The arabs"

And my personal favourite,

"Name a famous bridge"

"Er, over troubled water?"

Not sure that an education system can be to blame for stuff like this - upbringing, parents, family - one of these maybe.

That photo is a fake. It comes from about half-way down here (or, at least, we got the same photo from somewhere else...) and the contestant, Fiona Wheeler, really did earn £32,000 and certainly didn't give a stupidly wrong answer when she went out at 64k.

Certainly there have been people who have answered the first question on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? incorrectly, though in the US and, I believe, not in the UK. A video of at least one of them is available on YouTube and I wouldn't be surprised if you could find others as well if you looked.

All best,
Chris

And even if it was true how many of you can say that you would not give a stupid answer in front of a live audience and on TV?

Some people (and some of you) just wouldn't handle it.

But - It was funny even if a fake!

My point was, I reckon it would be a very easy mistake to make in the heat of the moment on TV, and when I first looked at the photo, I wondered why it was wrong.[:I]
