Ahhhhh he says with a deep sigh of appreciation.

At work, we've had something of a sea change and begun to migrate PCs to Apple laptops, for me that means a top spec. MacBook Air, and what a beauty he / she is ...

Am running Parallels to keep Outlook, MS Project, and MS Visio active, but just about everything else is in OS X Lion ... migrating iTunes from my old Lenovo PC was a doddle, as was just about everything else.

Any tips appreciated :X .

No specific tips....but I will say, moving from PC to Mac was the best thing I ever did!

Would be lost without my MacBook Air now!

Oh and recommend LibreOffice as a free MS Office package, Excel, Word type applications - work perfectly and the best bit is that it's FREE!

LibreOffice was a bit unstable on Lion when I got mine in August, mostly down to the fact Apple didn't release its OS APIs to developers ahead of the launch I suppose. Still NeoOffice worked better, so that's what I am with. I use CarbonCopyCloner for backup, I have some sw for this and that dev related, for the most part I am keeping it as "light" as possible, to go with the weight. While the biggest model is quite a bit more expensive than an iPad, I could never see myself needing a tablet with this sort of a machine.

Pull up a terminal and it's a unix box, with all that comes from that. I've been able to do slightly less than trivial things precisely to my satisfaction with a couple of commands. There's a wealth of information out there, all of it is basically legit, if not the typical thing you'd think of doing with a Mac box, it does make it even more powerful than what the very neat user interface would suggest.

Tried to login to the WIFI at my local Regus Business Lounge today, it was one of the WIFI connections where it connects you then pops an internet browser to allow you to enter a username and password.

For some reason I couldn't get the mac to "pop" the safari screen to allow me to enter this.

Has anyone else ever experienced this or have any solutions? Tried the troubleshooting, restarted both safari and mac, and turned wifi off and on!

Thanks

Using a MacBook Pro, and also thought I'd be going the bootcamp route to run Office. But got the education price on Office for Mac (£37) and never needed to bother since. I do have an Asus Lamborghini EE netbook as well though :)

All the time ... t-mobile connection in the UA RCC requires a login even if free (kinda like the hotels where you get a sheet with a 1-day pwd) and somehow the t-mobile site pops up (while Marriott usually just has you navigate in the browser itself). The pop-up (which pops up as soon as I pick up the wifi, doesn't wait for me to start up a browser) hangs, not sure why, assume it's some javascript on safari deal. I kill the window, launch firefox and screw around trying to force the t-mobile page to show up on ff. One time I actually picked up the url from the initial pop up and manually typed it into ff, but that's gotten better and I haven't had to do this since. You might be stuck if you have only Safari, as it really looks to me like the window is dealing with suboptimal javascript.

I treated myself to a Thunderbolt display over Christmas, and that is highly recommended!

Just wish that peripherals with Thunderbolt on it didn't have an extra zero added to the end of the price. :(

The Samsung Series 9 looks good, and one of my employees, who owns a lot of Macs, bought one. It's like-for-like pricier, which surprised me when they started talking about it, but an interesting product nonetheless. I wouldn't say he's switched, he's just a gadget junkie and had to have one.

A friend has a phone with W7.5 - that is really impressive. TBH, if I hadn't been using iOS for a while in various forms and I were buying a smart phone for the first time, I'd have gone for that. It was a bit fiddly to get W7.5 when I got my 4S, I could not get a phone with 7.5 preinstalled with my carrier of choice (would have had to buy a W7 and upgrade myself), and the 4S came with the SIM slot unlocked for non-US carriers, so I stuck with Apple. I was very tempted, though.

JCBR wrote:Anyone heard of someone who went from Mac to PC ?

I did...

But it was 1993, and I moved from a Mac Classic to Windows 3.1. basically as The Macs were what I had available to use at college, but once I had saved enough to buy my own computer I could only afford to buy a PC and not a Mac.

I can't help but wonder how much more common Mac's would have been if they had been competitively priced, or if Steve Jobs had allowed other companies to clone the hardware.

But then todays Macs would suffer a little like windows does from supporting a diverse range of hardware.

Today I have both. PC & a Mac Mini.

Ahh would like to know more ... currently it's permanently plugged into a Thunderbolt display, but I could easily drain it on a flight for example ...

The battery thing applies to anything portable and battery powered really.

You should't really use a lap-top or portable device plugged into the mains all the time as certain battery types 'learn' their charge cycles and so if they are plugged in all the time, they will not be happy when their's no power connected and so will drain very quickly reducing your usage time.

New types of battery are better but they all still do it to a certain degree.

You should calibrate your battery every few months by running the device on battery and letting it die completely then fully recharging it before using it again.

A full recharge is also not just until the light changes colour etc, as the rechargeable battery switches to trickle charge at this point and will only be about 80% charged. Full 100% charging often requires 12hrs +

I would be lost without my 11" air now. Carry it around with me all the time into uni, it has to be the perfect mix of portability and power.

Would love to treat myself to a thunderbolt display but can't really justify the price, I've already got 24" to plug it in to.

Had zero problems switching over from a windows machine, Office 2011 works perfectly. Also was able to get specialist software I use at uni for mac too. Things just seem to work better on the mac, sounds cliched but it is true. Gestures are all intuitive and work well unlike on windows machine.

Recently bad the switch from Blakberry to iPhone too...definite Apple convert! :)

Thanks - that I know, was wondering if Ben's comment was Air-specific!
