Is there any possibility of arranging a social event for v-flyer members near our shores?:)

Or are there quite a few v-flyer members north of the border who may wish to meet up? (if thats allowed?)[?]

I shall be in Edinburgh for the whole of August, and I know a couple of other of my soft-southern V-Flyer friends also enjoy the delights of the Festival too. How about we do something then?

Culture and a v-flyer social - I don't think the two have been mixed before ;). Sounds like a good idea to me though.

It would also give me an excuse/opportunity to get home, which does not happen so often. I would certainly be up for it if dates suit.

Well, the Festival "officially" opens on the 6th and runs until the 28th and any date in August avoiding the weekend of 12/13th works for me.

Well any date suits me, but would prefer a sat as work mon - fri and have no time off left! (as booked all my holidays this year).

I live in Glasgow so can come through to Edinburgh by train.

How about Saturday 19th August? Reasonably mid-month, so we'll know what's worth seeing by then :) Also gives the Sunday for those that want to stay over for more culture (innit).

One piece of advice for anyone thinking of going to Edinburgh in August, book a hotel room now. As the largest arts festival in the world (by a significant margin), it gets kind of busy ;)

A good point. The first time we went we ended up in the back of beyond somewhere because it was all we could get. Never again, and since then we have booked up a year or so in advance.

So perhaps organising a get together actually in Edinburgh during the festival may not be such a good plan?

Well if you are all coming for the festival, why not come to Glasgow?

Easier to get a hotel for a night adn the nightlife is wicked! Also we have some of the best restaurants!

Glasgow would make more sense as a base, for the reasons already stated. Sounds a great plan.

I'm unlikely to be able to get out of Edinburgh myself, since I'm working up there.

Sarah and I are interested - Hotels are coming up expensive, but I just checked online at malmaison.com as that is where we will mostly likely stay, and they currently are showing an Internet Rate of £119 inc tax for the Saturday night, which is far cheaper than any of the other decent places that are being shown on Expedia.

Credit Card guranatee required but you can cancel upto 4pm the day before at no penalty.

Thanks,
Richard

I appreciate your problem, Pete. I would much prefer Edinburgh, but already all of the Travel Inns are full - the nearest is Dunfermline. The nearest Marriott is £250+ for one night.

If we are going to have a group get together, has anyone got any suggestions?

Sounds like the making of a great V-Flyer social gathering!!!

I too have just been looking at rooms. The Hilton at EDI is £129 (advance purchase), which is only 6 miles from the centre? Good for me as I could fly up from MAN too.

Oh you point whores.... The EDI Hilton is nice, but there are the taxi rides to the city centre to figure in. I know I/we don't earn points at the Malmaison, but it is right in the city centre.

The £119 rate is for a double or twin, and you cna also request an extra bed - just in case pegitt is thinking of attending..... :P

Thanks,
Richard

And for flights, I hate to say this but BA is actually cheaper than BMI (and that is with the silly BMIBABY fares that earn nothing anyway).

Flights from LHR and LGW.

Thanks,
Richard

£119 is actually an excellent rate for a decent hotel if you can get it. Even the Travelodge is £70, although that books up a year in advance always. Last time I stayed in the Carlton during August it was £190 a night. Staying at the Hilton out of town is not bad except for the cab rides (remember, traffic is also going to be a bit sticky with so many people around).

Personally I'm renting a flat - but then I'm there for 4 weeks :)

Just tried to book the Malmaison and was told that the cheapest room with two double beds is £195 not inc. breakfast ... 'because there is a conference that week and we are adding a surcharge'.

Don't know if the surcharge is added when you book online, but the max you can get online is two people per room. [:(!]

Nothing extra appearing when booking online Nick. I've got the £119 rate :)

Booked 1 night - Saturday 19th August BTW :D

BMI are cheaper than BA for MAN>EDI flights - £53 return.

Ok, so it's official then. The first Scottish V-Flyer social will be in Edinburgh on 19th August.

Assume that there'll be lots of alcohol and at least one show involved...

We will be looking to your expert knowledge of the Fringe scene, Pete. ;)

Well, you never know, I could even venture North of the Border for a couple of days - wouldn't hurt to be involved in some whisky tasting if I'm forced....;)

Cheers
