Great to see you all yesterday (and some on Friday) at the Travel Show. A great day indeed (even if they didn't have a Mandarin Oriental and Foie Gras stand).

But the show was easilly superceded by Howards excellent party. The food and drink were excellent and combined with fantastic company and fantastic cheese, made what I truly belive to be a legendary V-Flyer meet. We will recount this night for years to come.. Howard, your hospitality was boundless and I thank you again for hosting a fantastic evening.

Sorry I won't see you all at the Riverboat, but I'll be sending my special envoy and no dout we will meet up soon [^]

Cheers!

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I really enjoyed myself, and, as I said to Andrew during the evening, 'so many wines, so little time': we never got the chance to do the chardonnay tasting let alone getting to the reds I had lined up as time flew.

It was such a pleasure to meet everyone last night.

Despite a valiant attempt at clearing up last night, I woke this morning to a distinct aroma combination of cheese and Eton Mess!

Thank you to Dominic for being the inspiration, and to Andrew for contributing so much to a unique Port tasting, one that I doubt I'll ever repeat.

Cheers! Howard

The wines we cracked open were:

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs (Magnum x 4)
Pommery Louise 1981 (Magnum)
Pommery Louise 1989 (Magnum)
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 x 2
Cloudy Bay Te Koko 2004
Warres Vintage Port 1977
Warres Vintage Port 1963
Taylors Vintage Port 1963
Willi Opitz Trockenbeerenauslese Pinot Noir 2004 (half)
Willi Opitz Beerenauslese Pinot Noir 2005 (half)
Chateau d'Yquem 1990 (half)

The cheeses were:

Blue...
Colston Basset Stilton
Cropwell Bishop Stilton
Papillon Roquefort
Carles Roquefort

Hard...
Greens Cheddar
Organic Cheshire
Beaufort
Gruyere, 16 months aged
Gouda, 2 years aged

Soft...
Palet de Bourgogne
Savarin
Epoisses
Camembert au Calvados
Cabri Ariegeois (goat)
Montenebro (goat)

I guess we need to do this again because the pairings I had in mind didn't quite ever happen. In particular, I had some big buttery Chardonnays for the soft cheeses as well as the Beaufort and Gruyere. Last night I also found a superb pairing for the Camembert au Calvados in a 2000 Pessac Leognan Haut Brion Blanc (you can never have enough cheese and wine).

Bye for now, Howard

Howard, I think I have some cheese in my fridge that is about 18 months old - I didn't think anyone would want to touch it let alone eat it - Let me know where to send it and its all yours :)

Looks like you all had a good time, disappointed I turned down a stand now!

Now I know very little about wine, but a Chateau d'Yquem 90? Oh my. Hopefully the Ch Margaux was hidden away!

Thanks,
Richard

Howard, all that wine and cheese, heavenly!

I particularly like the look of the Pommery, having taken a tour around their cellars in Epernay a few years back. I think the original Madame Pommery was called Louise, or had I had too much fizz by that stage and imagined it?
