Don your anorak and get technical about airplanes.

Well, I guess the forum title says it all!!!

For a number of years now, I've been collecting models of aircraft. These are not toys, they are actual scale models of real aircraft including correct markings and registration numbers. The range I collect is 1:400 sclle and are made of diecast metal. (That means, for example, a B747 would have a wing span of roughly 6 inches).

Amongst my collection, I have about 60% of the VA fleet - including a beauty of G-VFAB in "Birthday girl" colours.

Anyone else participate in this rather sad pursuit?!

Are there others that are unaware of this?

Also, I'm not sure the entire fleet has yet been produced in this model scale - anyone know?

When I get time, maybe I'll try posting a few pics - in the most part, they are very accurate little models indeed.

Annarack on, heading for the door...

Whilst its not my 'thing' I certainly don't think you are sad or an annorack!

for example some of us here enjoy the quiet satisfaction of getting the SEQ1 at check-in whilst others think thats barmy.

So if you enjoy it go for it !

I have an ANA B777 that I borrowed from the office, I really like it.
There was also a KE A380 that was hanging about which was huge, a good meter wingspan but unfortunately someone else borrowed that before I could.
Not a hobby but something I am very proud of!

Yes i have literally hundreds!! Including all releases in VS colour schemes.

When Gemini Jets released the first 2 models in VS colours, i seem to remember seeing that they were going to release the whole fleet. And there were new releases every couple of months or so. But then as time went on, the releases got further and further apart and now the most recent 2 models brought out were G-VSHY and G-VFAB back in Dec 2008. There was also G-VIRG released last year but that was for onboard sales only i think - although i have seen them in the shops for a lot more than the £30 i paid for it onboard!

I'd imagine there will be an A330 model coming out soon enough.

Yes I collect. Mainly collect Gemini and Phoenix.

Current fleet are:

Singapore Airlines:
A380-800 9V-SKC
744- 9V-SPK (Tropical scheme)
744- 9V-SPP (Star Alliance)
77W- 9V-SWD

Jet Airways:
77W- VT-JEA

Delta:
763- N125DL

Gulf Air
77W- VT-JEG

JAL:
773- JA8941 (Japanese cartoon livery)

Alaska Air:
737-700- N548AS

Lion Air:
737-900- PK-LEF

Pacific Blue/Virgin Blue
738- VT-VUN

Virgin Atlantic:
346- G-VRED
346- G-VSHY
744- G-ROY
742- G-VIRG
744- G-VFAB (Birthday Girl scheme NOT 21st Birthday colours)

VS have not released every aircraft in 1:400 size. If you google Wings 900, they have a model database which will show you a list of every VS model ever made. I did have a very early 346 model which was purchased back in 2004, sadly it was broken when I moved house.

So yes I do collect. Havent purchased anything for a couple of months (partly because the VS releases tend to be duty free only now ie: not in the model stores). There are also a lot of IP issues with the models as well.

Am in the process of building a terminal, have airbridges and ground service equipment and everything!

You should have seen our house a few years ago when my son was younger. His bedroom resembled LHR, LGW and JFK combined. He had models of nearly every aircraft flown commercially. They have now been re-boxed but a few are still hanging around, most notably an Emirates A380

Clearing out one of my cupboards prior to moving and found two of those Concorde 1:200 models in Virgin Atlantic livery. Made when Branson announced he wanted to buy the BA Concordes for a £1 each (and Sir Michael Bishop of BMI, at the time, made the very funny quip "That's all very well, but who's going to lend him the money?").

I have:

3 x G-VSHY Madame Butterfly
3 x G-VFAB Lady Penelope
1 x G-VROM Barbarella
1 x G-VIRG Maiden Voyage 25th anniversary limited edition
1 x G-VIRG Maiden Voyage early prototype.

I do miss the metal cases they use to come in.

How Phoenix do not get into any hot water over their models I will never know! Its quite well known that Gemini Jets have an exclusive deal with VS, so how Phoenix have managed to produce this one is beyond me. Order placed, just hope that my usual stockist gets a fair number. Pray this beauty does not become as rare as the VA 77W!

Hi all,

I've got a 1:200 scale of G-VSHY when it was called Claudia Nine and its silver and has the 'Mine's bigger than yours' motto on the side.

Just a bit of info regarding G-VLIP. Its actually cheaper to use www.airparadigm.com and have it shipped to the UK. Only paid £29 for it delivered, where as the only UK site ive seen it on are charging £35 plus delivery.

I've used Air Paradigm before and had no problems.
