I am reading "Skyfaring" by Mark Vanhoenacker at the moment and it got me thinking about my first ever flight on an aircraft...

1982
Monarch Airlines
Luton to Alghero, Sardinia

The most memorable part was take-off and landing of course, but also the the meal: meat pie, mashed potatoes and rockhard burnt peas. Dessert was half a tinned peach with a whirl of dream topping on top.

Needless to say, as an excited kid I ate the lot ;)

What was you first flight? When, with what airline and where to? What is your most memorable aspect of your maiden flight?

A DC-3 from Londonderry (I think) to Ringway in 1959 or so. Have no idea which airline.

A British Airways super 1-11 from Manchester to Copenhagen on a school trip in 1979.

I remember walking onto the tarmac and up the stairs at the rear of the aircraft. :D

Wardair 747 out of Prestwick to Calgary to meet cousins who had emigrated.

Everything was new, but memories were china plates and proper cutlery etc. ?|

Never realised how big the jumbos were until the same trip the next year when at the next gate was Concorde. :D

That was a few years ago :0

Like pjh a DC 3 in the mid to late fifties. This was with BEA from Ringway to the Channel Islands, I remember that my mother was very hesitant about boarding. She thought that all the riveting was a sign of slapdash repairs and had assumed that the fuselage would be made in one piece!
The next leg was in a DH Rapide from either Jersey or Gurnsey to Alderney, she had no qualms about that flight as it was a "proper " aircraft with a spare wing!

early 90s - club 18-30
double touched at Gatwick

Air hostess was messing around with one of the baggage compartments & above my mate who was fast asleep.
Not sure what she did, but a bucket of Ice & ice water fell out all over my mate.

On landing we heard the cabin crew call the pilot to say the engine was on fire.
When we disembarked the plane there was a big scorch mark along the fuselage.

Skyfaring is a fantastic book. I highly recommend it to anyone with even the slightest interest in aviation. Superbly written.

Late 1960's I think, first 747 to land at Porec airport Yugoslavia. We thought all the fire engines/ambulances we're out to great us, later told it was cause they weren't sure the runway was going to be long enough for us to land!!!! Think it was also when you could only take £50 abroad with you! Oh happy days :-)

I did something similar much later in in life when my brother bought my dad a trial flying lesson.,,,

I, on the other hand, thought I was going to die.

"Pull back on the stick when the airpseed reaches 80" said the instructor.

Dad pulled the stick back at 70

"Stall alert! Increase airspeed immediately!" shouted every alarm.

"" went my heart.

Mine was around 1978 on a British Caledonian DC10 from Gatwick to Lagos. I was about 7 years old and flew this route many times over the following few years as my father worked in Nigeria.

An Air Atlantis 737.

From Belfast to Faro. Even the flight delay excited me, as I could then join in flight delay conversations!!

y) We must be the same vintage pjh, as my first flight was also on a DC3 in 1958 from Speke (Liverpool) as it was then to Bremen on a school exchange trip. I also don't remember the airline, but we were supplied with leather helmets and goggles ;)

Britannia 737 (probably a -200) September 1985, I was 8, Glasgow-Ibiza. I was in seat 1A. Best thing I remember was the take off, the sausages for breakfast and my ears hurting on landing.

Ive been recommend Skyfaring by somebody else, will look out for it.
