BA cancellation policy

Here's the situation:
Have booked a flight LHR-ATH-LHR for Dec this year. Now need to cancel the outbound owing to onward connection to Rhodes on Aegean having a schedule change making it 2 hours earlier and rendering our BA flight useless - need to rebook on EZY so as to get to ATH in time to make the Aegean. All I want to do is cancel the outbound BA & get the tax back. The fare was 72 of which tax is 47, so not to be sniffed at.

BA say that as we're on a return the removal of the outbound constitutes a 'change' meaning 50 per person to cancel. Our friend is also in the same boat but his BA booking was for a single only and he has been allowed to cancel and get tax back.

If we did nothing, and just left booking as is, could we simply not use the outbound but still use the return?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
James

The general rule appears to be that if you do not use the outbound the return leg is automatically cancelled.
