Travelling to Cairo this friday.

Hi Guys

Im extremely concerned about travelling to Cairo this friday what with the recent civil unrest and riots.
In a nut shell with more protests now being organised i feel that it would be unwise to stay in the city where i am booked.
I am booked in the Conrad and then moving to the Fairmont Heliopolis later in the week both inner city, both have unfortunately declined to help rearrange these dates as they were restricted fares, so i will have to just cancel them outright and lose the money paid.

BA on the otherhand i can change so not worried too much there.

My platinum amex travel insurance wont cover for war or civil unrest so no help there either, i did pay on my vs black amex though and so i wondered if anyone else would be able to advise what my best options were?

What are the FCO advising?

Surely if FCO advise against travel then your insurance should cover you?

Latest, as of now, are no restrictions, just common sense advice to avoid demonstrations etc.

IFAIK, unless the FCO advise against travel to a country, any cancellations will be as per the cancellation policy. Having said that, the travel companies may offer their own policy. At the moment BA are not.

Thats the annoying bit there is no restrictions but who is going to want to travel to a city destination with what is happening.

Just wondered if there was any ideas i hadnt thought of.

Anyway i have cancelled the flight and to rebook now for anytime this year was another £700 but with the points back in my account i have almost enough points for a pair of 241 F tickets for about the same cost so i wasnt gonna waste the cash now.

The Conrad actually cancelled my booking although it being restricted which was very kind of them to do, however the fairmont said they wouldnt change it, oh well.

All in all over 2K wasted but i would rather be safe than caught up in there problems whilst in Egypt.

cheers

I was due to be in Cairo this week but the company security team advised against it so cancelled. I'm due to out there again next week as well so playing it by ear at the moment. Fortunately I stay at the Mena House by the Pyramids so well way from the potential hotspots.

Trouble is unless the FO say it's dangerous to go travel companies won't do anything to help.

I had to cancel a couple of hotels last year that were on restricted rates Sofitel in Montreal was one.I never rang them just canceled the room online and they never put the charge through. That was booked direct no cash up front, obviously if you have already paid not much you can do.
