Site problems today? (8th September 06)

Not sure if it is just me but it is taking ages to load up the site and then again ages to get into each forum (took forever to get in PM's also). When in the forum it does seem a bit quicker.

Has anyone got the same problem or is it just me?

Neil:)

I noticed that too - not sure if the server was offline, or just dropped off of DNS... [?]

Oooh - all back up? I thought it was our poxy proxy here in the office but obviously not.

Thanks,
Sarah

Well its 100million% better than it was this morning before it went offline, and so far I have not had any problems since I have been on. I had to actually do some work this morning with it been offline[ii]

Hmm, I have been browsing around since about 13:45 without an issue, and was about to reply here that I was not having any problems. Hitting 'Reply to topic' served me up a 'Service Unavailable' page about 10 times in a row [:(]

Sounds like Pete really needs that server....

Pete - offer of help still open if I can in any way.

I have also just had this problem, but this happens at some point most days whilst I am using the site, so I don't think that is specifically linked to the main problem today (although Im probably wrong).

No, not wrong - I agree, seem to be getting that most days recently, but not 10 times in a row [:#]

This morning's problem was related to the ISP somehow managing to screw up the file system on the server.

There is an ongoing issue (normally showing itself as Server Unavailable) which is related to the sheer volume of hits the server gets, and occassionally just runs out of resources to serve everyone. Personally I think that issue is more to do with the way the ISP has configured the server, but the solution is not simple, since getting data off the current ISP is very difficult.

But, we are working on a solution and will be fixing this ISP issue as soon as it's possible.

I take it you're managed hosting then, rather than colo? That always sux [:(]

It came about because of how the site started (ie, from very humble beginnings). If I had known then how difficult it would be to migrate to a different server, I would have never had signed up with the ISP we're with. I'm certainly not short of options on server space (even got a dual-pentium web server in my own rack at the end of 18MB's worth of pipe).

The company I work for have about 22Gbps of bandwidth. We provide DDoS mitigation services and hardened DNS, and are located at TeleCity Harbour Exchange. If you're interested, I'll see how much we charge for space (I'll try and get a good one!).

If you get a new server in somewhere and up and running, switching over should be a cinch. Should only have a few minutes of downtime, though if you wanted to switch over with 100% sync of messages, I'm sure we would all accept a larger downtime for the long-term benefit of the service.

Well, be interested to see what sort of deal you could get. PM me when you find out.

As for migration, that would assume the current ISP had any way of easily getting off them. They don't even offer Enterprise Manager access to SQL, which makes exporting data tricky at best.

No SQL access! Bummer. I'm a little out of date with SQL (last qualified with SQL 2000!), so can't offer much help there. I'm off to our office in Miami on Tuesday, so I'll ask about hosting for you. How much space do you need (in U's)?

According to the DNS records, you are on Schlund space. Is that with them direct, or with 1&1 or something? I have a major client with Schlund - he may be able to help get data out, or provide advice.

1&1 - I believe the physical location of the server is in Germany.

I've been trying to log on since 2PM, was the server down again ? :)

Yes - looked like the server went offline. Of course, no explanation why from the ISP [V][:?]
