A quick report---

Flew USAIR 1st class BOS-LAX, and no surprise that this is the lamest 1st class in flight. 7.5 hours to LAX with Charlotte layover. One vegie lasagna, one dumb movie, one glass orange juice, ancient seats, no leg rests, and, amazingly, for an airline which says it should absorb Delta, as always, late.

Glad to arrive LAX. Half attentive agent issued BP's.
The Koru lounge is okay but certainly not unique. I struggled to pick up on any kiwi undertones but enjoyed the wines and the celeb sightings (Gillian Anderson and family) --found the food dull but showers hot. Great wireless internet and many available work stations. The lounge allows seats which have incredible views over the runways (saw two VS planes leave and arrive) as well as LA hills. FAB sunset. FSA came through clubhouse and introduced herself to each of us (nice touch).

Boarding called, was interested to immediately note that NZ flat seats are crowded and narrow compared to VS, much more of a stall than a bed as there are many more seats packed into the non 744's--however food was far better. As this was a 12 plus hour flight and clubhouse offerings were thin, was happy to find an excellent but light menu, really good wines and light dessert, followed by just before landing excellent breakfast. Wondered though about serving smoked haku fish for dinner as it made the cabin quite erm..fishy...

Only two staff on for our side of cabin (full flight) and they worked hard all night. Wine and water topped up ad lib and regular inquiries re --do you need anything? Knowing that NZ do not provide ninja suits--brought VS ones and joined the ranks of several others who had airlines pj's to better the 13 hour flight. Several turbulent bouts en flight but captain sensitive to seat belt on/off, so no worries. Amenities were same as VS plastic bag in Y but lotions available in cramped bathrooms--odd smell

Narrow berth made window gazing a challenge but was delighted to see crescent moon and stars. Cabin stayed hot all night and as duvets are heavier than VS, not a pleasant ambiance. Dark stayed dark from start to end--even as we arrived Aukland.

Arrived AKL, transferred to new NZ flight which connects via international terminal to CHC, v convenient.

All in all, NZ were pretty good but no panache as VS--missed the whoopee but appreciated the effort and on time, well informed arrivAL.[8D]
