BA2227 LGW-ATL 5 MAR FIRST

I knew that the flight was almost empty (about 50% in all cabins) so couldnt believe this upgrade, we were sent off to the lounge with a huge smile on our faces. This was the first trip on BA for Mrs Stuart101 and was hoping she liked Club World as she had only travelled VS UC before. Security was fairly quiet and we made our way to the lounge for breakfast.
At the desk in the FIRST lounge we were met by a very nice agent who looked a tour new boarding passes and said Ah Mr Stuart101 i have been waiting for you, this set my heart racing, what if it was all a mistake, she went on to ask if i knew why i had been upgraded which of course i had no idea. She told me that it was a thank you from the BA Executive club for my continued custom. I was even more astonished by this as i only take 4 or 5 long haul trips per year usually booking WT+ and using miles to upgrade so i am not a big spender. I cant even claim that BA are trying o get me to travel in F rather than CW as there is no F cabin on my regular trip route.
The FIRST lounge was fairly small but very comfortable with a well stocked bar and some lovely Bacon Rolls, it is no way as good as the clubhouse but anything away from the crowds in the main terminal is a blessing.
We decided to stroll to the gate before the flight was called and arrived about 2 minutes before boarding started. We were soon aboard and heading to the front of the plane still grinning like Cheshire cats. Settled into our home for the next 9 hours and forced to accept a glass or 2 of Champagne. There were only 3 other people in FIRST with Club less than half full and WT+ & WT about 50% full.
Soon after takeoff service started, more champagne nibbles and all the bits and pieces you could think of. Really good meal, stayed with Champagne for the starter, moved to a wonderful 10 year old St Julien to accompany my steak and forced to the port to go with some really good cheese.
The crew made up beds in the spare seats for all passengers so that we could retire for a rest if we wished. Had a little doze (could have been something to do with all that alcohol) and it was soon time for afternoon tea. Really good sandwiches, Scones and cake served with a proper mug of Tea.
All too soon it was time to leave this haven of luxury and start our visit to America with huge queues at Immigration, and a baggage and security system that makes MCO look like getting off a bus.
Although it was a great experience to travel in First i dont think i would pay out for it, Club World is fine for me, a comfortable bed, plenty of space, good wine and food i just cant justify the difference in price, but of course if BA wish to give me another upgrade i will be there like a shot.
