I can get a clear 12 hours, audio only, but there are a few things that kill it:
Video = 2 hours, max. Seems the constant flicking of millions of pixels eats that battery real quick.
Changing songs = unless you let the ipod do the work (suffle/playlist), the pre-load it does is wasted. That can lose a good 2 hours off the battery life
Clicking through looking at artwork, etc = another hour or so gone from a full charge.
Is she doing any of those?

You can only encode up to 5 mins of a movie with the demo version.

You can also try the
Videora iPod video coverter which works fine, and has the added advantage of being freeware.

I've used it but, since I tend to put vids onto my ipaq for the improved screen and control, it hasn't been heavily employed.
Best wishes

There are a number of problems associated with the 1.1 software for the 5th Gen iPod. It seems to be a bit hit and miss whether or not they affect your player - the 1.1 update was released to allow sycing with the apple
remote I'd advise reading the
iPod forum. For the moment I've resisted updating my 5th Gen player to 1.1 because of lottery problems associated.
I think the major problem is that video playback is compramised.
