V-Flyer

I am wondering whether anyone here knows what I can get to enable me to tune into radio frequencies above 115 Mhz. All the radios I have go up to about here, and I want to try to pick up ATC frequencies from local airports (specifically EWR), but I can't find any type of stream on the web for them. I tried searching for such devices but I'm not having much luck.

Strangely, that band is restricted to air-band receivers/transceivers

Try Sporty's pilot shop (here) for starters - you can buy receivers & transceivers with audio-out ports to listen to on your PC. Alternatively, SOME ATC centers/towers provide Internet feeds, but they're very rarely published and always slightly delayed...

Don't Radio Shack sell "Scanners" as I believe the cutely call them?

Yup - legal to own in the US, not over here.

Be very careful if you take it spotting - I understand the authorities take a very dim view indeed of finding a scanner on a spotter - these are very security conscious days we live in.

Never been up for that whole activity stream, so I'm safe - VERY questionable pastime if you ask me... [:0]

Don't a lot of ATC broadcast over the web now? Not sure if you want to listen whilst in the house or on the road. I know I have a link in my itunes for live ATC from JFK

Hmm odd i picked one up from Maplins not so long ago.

A scanner is fine to use over here as it only receives a signal,
you will be fine using it around UK airports as 99% of spotters have one on them.

I have a scanner for police and emergency frequencies (which is illegal, shhhhh) so I assume the ones you are talking about are similar. The one I have currently won't let you tune to specific frequency though.

Paul: Where on that website are the scanners, all I see are a lot of gambling and women.

EDIT: Ah ha! I found one!. Tad expensive though.

as mots ATC's from US/UK freq's start around the same band 118.000.

No idea, I got it from my neighbor several years ago, who had it a while. As I said, there's no way for me to actually tune into a specific frequency.
