I'm considering giving in and finally investing in an iPod. Can anyone beat $269 (buying in US with educational discount). OK, so I'd have to take my laptop and load all the music on over there, but if it's the best deal...

I guess that depends what type/spec you're after? Nano, shuffle, 30Gb/60Gb, etc...
Cheers

Sorry Michael, I should have clarified that. I meant the 30GB iPod. Here's a
link to the educational site.

Not looked too far, but from the "big stores",
Dixons have a 30Gb white iPod on their website for £184.98 with free standard delivery -
Currys have the same, but also a 30Gb black iPod for the same price. There are stacks on eBay too....
Cheers

Have a had a look round and cant find a better offer in the uk then £184.98 which Amazon also have with free dly, so your $269 looks a good, with the $ at a good price at the mo (just got 1.78 on my card) that make your ipod about £152, don't think you will beat that

Thanks, Neil. Kind of what I was hoping for. However, saving £30 on an iPod is hardly justification for a trip across the pond

Hmm, what else can I buy....? [}:)]

I don't think you'd need to load anything in the US. The iPod's a dumb device. CD's can be loaded anywhere. iTunes Store is region specific in terms of cost, but not (generally) in terms of content..

My best mate works for the Apple store in Manchester and says it does not matter where you buy the thing you can load music on it anywhere!

Didnt you have to use a US based credit card to set up the US one - or was that something else I read about?

I think that is the case. They have to have some way of establishing that you can't buy the cheaper tracks from the US. Globalisation - a wonderful thing [V]

Maybe buy a US prepaid 'credit' card to get US iTunes prices? or a prepaid US iTunes account?

US itunes gift cards (ahem, eBay

) are a good compromise...

I can confirm that US purchased iTunes prepaid music cards work fine from the UK - after setting up a separate account.
Also rumours are that new/updated iPods are due in the next few weeks/months - so it might be worth hanging on if you can.

I have heard this rumour too, but from what little I was told it seemed it would be months rather than weeks!!

You never know with Apple. However, the current iPod range hasn't been updated for a while and the consensus from rumour sites is that new products must be around the corner. The Apple WWDC is next week with Steve Jobs delivering the keynote - so maybe then???

I read somewhere that the video iPod is getting a bigger screen. Not sure I beleive it but it said the whole of the iPod front would be the screen with a see-through click wheel to operate it.

The bigger screen for the video iPod is one of the things I have heard too, must admit it is a bit rubbish at the mo, prefer to use my PSP for video things (but thats too bulky to carry around!)
