I want to take my Tomtom to the US for driving around Chicago and I wanted to check that the cigarette lighter socket in a US car works for UK ciggy lighter plugs supplied with UK tomtoms. I'm assuming it does work but just wanted to check!

Thanks - that's what I suspected but didn't really fancy sticking the wrong voltage or polarity through my nice little tomtom. Does anyone know accurate tomtom's are in the US?

Ours was pretty good when we did our three state drive from Cedar Point to Chicago.

I used mine last week for a drive from Delaware to Connecticut and then on to Boston, no problems at all. Of course, you need a TomTom with US mapping.

The accuracy doesn't vary whichever country you use them in, TomTom use teleatlas map data and it's as good as Navteq's. The most important bit is ensuring your map is current.

Should be. Mine worked last year on 2 Chevvy Impala's and a Pontiac Grand Prix

Be warned though - I have had a couple of rentals where the ciggie lighter was either broken (or disabled) - probably worth making sure before you drive out of the lot so you can switch the car if necessary.
