I want to be able to log into my email while on holiday in the UK, and wondered if there is anyone else apart from Orange offering a 'daily/pay as you go' facility (you have to buy their dongle, plug it into a USB socket on the laptop then you can access the internet via the Orange network - 7GBP/day - cost aside the convenience is important as we won't be near any cyber-cafe type places...)?

Have a look at the 3 (three.co.uk) offering. 3G access and you can buy a PAYG dongle.

Do you have a mobile that could do the job in tethered or BT connected mode?

T-mobile have network HSPDA link

Think I'll go with T-Mobile - £4/day pay as you go is perfect for what I need.
