advice please miles junkies?
i'm thinking of spending around £5000 on a car. does any one think it is worth taking the 1.5% dealer surcharge to pay on my virgin credit card thus getting 10000 miles? For the sake of my milage balance I say yes.... but in reality I suppose the 75quid is better saved towards the next cash ticket I buy...come on you mileage mathmeticians justify it for me [?]

The only thing I would ask, is whether or not the car dealer has agreed to this. I tried once paying for a new car with Amex and the dealer wouldn't wear it - even with a surcharge added. This was a few years ago (and it was Amex [:I] )

I think you got to look at it as 10,000 miles = 1/10 way to SFO(now )HKG etc in UC. So £75 x 10 = £750, if you are happy to pay around £850 (with taxes) for a ticket then go for it if not i wouldn't bother. If you use the miles for Y/W tickets IMO it's not worth it.

Yes I suppose comparing against a UC ticket it is easier to justify.

I'm also of the view that another 75 quid when I'm buying a car is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and my FC account is a savings scheme for future pleasure!!!![:o)]

If you are a points whore then, IMHO, you HAVE to aim to spend the points in the premium classes.

They are much more cost effective in J as opposed to Y. Though saving up does take that much longer. [:#]

Looked at another way PVGSLF, it is £75 for a one way Y-S upgrade - I'd pay that. Of course what you could do is negotiate for the car dealer to pay the 1.5% for you - after all it's them that want to sell you the car.

Stop looking for the cheapest Econ fare, get an upgradeable Econ fare and use miles to go higher. Then don't look at it as paying too much for an Econ fare, but paying much less for PE [^]

By George, He's got it! You see PVGSLF, that's the problem with this site. You join as a perfectly normal, totally respectable, utterly dependable sort of a chap. But after a couple of months you become a miles whore. The next stage is to stop thinking PE and start thinking UC!

I never thought about using my card when buying a car, but if I am spending over £100 I normally use my Credit Card, not only do I earn miles, but I like the extra protection afforded under section 75 of the consumer credit act which makes the card company equally liable for the purchase.

£75 for 10000 miles makes sense... Go for it.

A thought just occured to me PVGSLF. Save all your miles with the object of accruing enough for 2x Y to G upgrades. Use the upgrades for the happy day you can fly your girl back here.

Yes I fear that is going to happen, especially once I have tasted UC thanks to my company's long overdue change in long haul travel policy.

I think the deal was 20k miles for a £95 fee last summer when I signed up.
