Is this possible? (Cancellation/refund query)

Hi

Just wondering is this is possible. If you have a 'Q', or otherwise discounted/restricted economy fare, is it possible to pay to have this upgraded to a 'Y' fare, and then cancel, getting the Y (fuplly flexible) fare refunded, losing just the Q change fee?

I ask as I have a Q fare booked for later in the year and there is a small possibility I can't make the trip.
Just wondering if this work-around is possible.

Thanks
Andy

I believe that the last time this was asked the answer was "No" as this would be a somewhat obvious loophole.

Hi Andy,

The fare upgrade rules specifically prevent this. The "original, non-refundable" element of the fare (the full value of your Q fare) remains entirely non-refundable. The only bit you'd get back would be the taxes and the difference BETWEEN the Q and the Y I'm afraid.

The "letter of the law" is in the top section of the ticket rules for a Q fare:

MAY UPGRADE THE ENTIRE JOURNEY TO A HIGHER VS FARE AT CHARGE OF GBP 50.00 PER TRANSACTION. ANY DIFFERENCE IN FARE MUST BE COLLECTED. ORGINAL REFUND CONDITIONS APPLY TO ANY UPGRADED TICKET

Presumably you could change the dates though, so all would not be lost..
