Old dis-continued VS routes

I was wondering what places VS used to fly?

I know they used to do LGW-ATH and LGW-EWR

I also heard somewhere they used to fly LHR-ORD and LHR-YYZ, but they got cancelled because of 9/11.

So, do you know where they used to fly, what aircraft were used and how often

thanks

another one was LGW-MIA and LGW-BOS, but those they just moved to LHR when the slots openned up.

Dont forget also LGW-PHC (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) which stopped recently.

So we had-

LGW-MIA
LGW-ATH
LGW-BOS

I think Athens was stopped after 9/11?

I presume the MIA and BOS one changed to LHR after BA cut down after 9/11?

PHC was changed to go throught VK's hub at LOS

I'm not sure if you can count LGW-MIA, LGW-EWR, and LGW-BOS because they simply switched airports. And with the EWR flight at least, it kept the flight number as well. I think VS used to fly their a320s to Spain and maybe Portugal. And no, I don't mean Virgin Sun, that was later.

There was a second SFO flight during 2001. (To LGW? - or was it LHR?)

I remember ORD and YYZ. I flew to both in the late nineties and remember I was disappointed that shortly after, virgin started advertising that they would start on those routes.

It really shows the power of the Virgin Brand. I had never flown virgin before, but was still disappointed that i was too soon to try.

Virgin came close to flying to Pittsburgh after British Airways pulled out but they elected to move the extra route rights to Las Vegas instead.

The second IAD-LHR run; be it short lived in the summer

If I recall there was a second flight to BOS during the summer too, think it was 2004.

Thanks,
Richard

VS never flew under its on right to Spain and Portugal.
Also, I flew the second BOS in 2004 - it was an afternoon departure and an early morning return. I think the designation was 053? I think this was meant to keep the slots.

IIRC the 2nd BOS service ran 3 x weekly, and the extra IAD service was 4 x weekly. and was indeed used to hold slots (I think until the seasonal Cape Town services re-started that Autumn).

I also flew on that extra IAD service as well that summer - actually, that was my last trip on an arcadia aircraft - G-VFLY 8K:)

IIRC VS won the rights to fly to Moscow, but never operated the route.

The NRT flight used to stop in Moscow on route for a crew change and some more fuel since it was operated on a 747-200.

Why ATH? What is the significance of ATH?
