What is the likelihood of being able to pay for an upgrade from Economy (X-class) at Heathrow - or, of giving a personal 'tip' to the check-in staff? Could they oblige?

Paying? Very good - see http://www.v-flyer.com/upgrades.asp. Personal 'tip' - what, like "Don't eat yellow snow"? Or bribe? The former MIGHT work - as in humour might sway them to like you and upgrade you. The latter seems more likely to see you assigned a middle seat near the toilets. :D
