To give you a bit of background; Our flights are booked on a Virgin & Air NZ combined ticket & were booked via dial a flight. At time of booking I asked for a 12 month flexible ticket. The tickets were booked at the beginning of May for outbound travel on 4 Jan 07.

Here is our problem. After calling dial a flight to get our dates changed to 17 May & being told they would have to contact, Virgin which they did. Dial a Flight got back to me & said that the contract I have with Virgin states that Outbound travel must be taken on or before 31 March 07. I have been told that this may be extended & if so then I can change our flights for the price of an admin fee, fair enough. However, the info I’m getting from Dial a Flight is that the chances of them exchanging the dates are pretty slim & if that’s the case then our other option is to cancel without refund & loose the best part of 2 grand & the rebook.

It would be practically impossible to fly before 31 March as my wife is due on the 18th.

Is it possible to cancel an outbound flight & still take the return leg?

Do you experts know of any other Avenues that I could go down? I’m *G member in case that’ll help.

It’s pretty important to us to get back to the UK with our new born as we don’t have any family our here & our families back home will be champing at the bit to see there 1st grandchild & niece/nephew.

Thanks in advance.

Brian,
Welcome to V-Flyer. We're delighted to have you on board.

Your situation is understandably frustrating. Have you spoken with Virgin directly? You mention that you are a gold flyer; is that on VS? VS does do what it can to help its most frequent flyers. If there is no availability in the class purchased, given your circumstances VS may be willing to make an exception to allow you to change your trip dates. I would start by calling the Flying Club folks in London. They are very helpful. But ... this isn't a guarantee and as you likely know, you'll stand a better chance if you provide VS with several alternatives and you don't act as if you expect that you'll be accommodated.

As for canceling an outbound leg while keeping the inbound leg, I have never seen that happen. ISTBC, however, in my experience if an outbound leg isn't flown the entire reservation is canceled.

Others will have their thoughts on this, I'm certain. Of course, we all like to know how these things turn out, so please keep us posted.

Again, welcome to V-Flyer.

Thanks ChuckC.

I'm a BMI Gold memmber, i'm sure this won't have much clout with Virgin though.

I tried calling the virgin call centre (is it in India?), they passed me off to dial a flight, although I didn't explain my situation.

I'm not wanting anything free here & i'm more than willing to pay 100pounds, 200pounds, 300pounds of whatevrr it is I need to pay to get my flights changed.

Any others have any thoughts/comments?
