V-Flyer

Nothing at all to do with flying. I am selling some stuff on e-bay, and before you ask no it is not amenity kits or sleep suits! I have set up a paypal account, and put it as a payment method on my items. But at the end of the auction what will happen. Will an automatic email go out to the successful buyers? Will they then send me their postal address and once I see my money in my paypal account I assume I then send them the stuff?

Sorry to be thick, but it is all rather new to me, especially being of the older generation:D

Basically, its as you said (well done!) - You will need to get in touch with your buyer once the bidding has finished (via the ebay email sytem thingy), you will then liase with them over payment (give them your Paypal details etc), once payment is received you will post it to the address they have given you. hereis the Ebay guide to completing the your sale.

Its very simple, designed especially for you oldies!;)

I thought that once the auction is over, the buyer then pays using PayPal, it's all done automatically. You (as the seller) dont need to contact the buyer at all unless there's a problem?

Once the buyer has paid using PayPal, you get an email saying they have paid you and the money is in your PayPal account. You can then transfer the money into your bank account (PayPal take quite a large cut though)

Paypal will be automatic.

The winning bidder will get an email to say they have won the auction, they can then either click the link in the mail or within the auction page to complete Paypal payment.

When they make a payment, you'll get an email to say they have paid you, and the mail will have their delivery address on it. Funds will be exchanged instantly, and will remain in your Paypal account until you transfer it to your bank account. Its perfectly safe there, and probably best you leave it accumulating there till you get £50 or so - then you do not have to pay a transfer fee to get it to your bank account.

Word of warning - beware emails from Paypal in your inbox, there are hundreds of phishing scams for eBay and Paypal, so just be careful.

James - you are correct and can do it using the "Paypal checkout" function, were payment is made automatically without contact from the buyer etc. I personally find it better to contact the buyer and liase with them to ensure everything is hunky dory, both ways work fine though.

As only last week I bought something of eBay and payed using PayPal, I'd no idea if the buyer had received the money or was even sending me the item until the item actually arrived at my door a few days later. It's always better if some sort of communcation is used during the transaction.

Also dont forget to leave feedback, most sellers now wont leave buyers any feedback until the buyer leaves feedback first - I'm still waiting for the seller to leave me feedback, despite leaving her feedback [n]

Indeed I started this post off by typing Paypall, when of course pall has nothing to do with it! So how does AmWest fit into the thread:D

A few words of warnings about paypal.
I do alot of business on ebay and used paypal for a couple of years with well over 2000 paypal transactions in this period.

First problem was my paypal account being hacked and a nice man from eastern europe spending £1100 on my account's registered credit card.As it was a credit card I got the money back from the card company,if it had been a debit card, bye bye money.
Rule 1 always have a credit card with a very low limit registered to paypal,never a bank debit card or worse still your bank account registered with them.

Problem 2 If someone pays you with a duff card or someone puts in a dispute notice on a transaction your account is frozen and it takes months to sort out. I was in a situation when some scrote put in a dispute saying I hadn't dispatched £30s worth of goods,result my account was frozen for 6 weeks with a ballance of £900 locked in it.
Rule 2 Always sweep your paypal account ballance into your bank account leave nothing in it to get frozen or stolen by hackers

Problem 3 Last year I transfered 3 amounts from paypal into my bank account over 3 days at the end of June 2005.The sum involed was over £5500,the money didn't hit my bank account.To say paypal were unhelful is an understatement.It took me until December 2005 to get the money credited,I never received an explanation or apology and only got the money because I refered the matter to the FSA ombudsman.
My rule 3 don't touch paypal with a very long pole:D.

Something else to try:

I eBay way too much! You could always go to the Answer Center (look at the top of your My eBay page, it has a tab, Community; click it. Then look at the left side of the screen for 'Answer Center,' click that). Since you're talking about PayPal, post a question for first-time seller help in that forum; chances are you'll get a lot of help. Who knows; I surf the AC quite a bit when I'm not writing or buying (eeek!), and I might even be one of the responders.

Please make sure to do three things right now, if you can: change your eBay Seller preferences to: no sales to buyers with negative Feedback, no sales to buyers with multiple UnPaid Buyer Disputes (UID) within 30 days, and monitor your auctions closely. If you have an unwelcome buyer, you can cancel their bid, you know - but you must have time to do so!

If you want to only take PayPal, there's way to make 'PayPal account required' on your auctions, which cuts down on the fradulent bidders who prey on newbie sellers. Most of the fraudsters from Nigeria, Russia, and Romania don't have or can't get PayPal accounts.

And your end of auction eBay messages to your buyers CAN be automated, by eBay - just do a Help search on 'link eBay and PayPal accounts,' do it, and voila! EBay sends your winning bidder all the info for you. Of course, it's only polite to email them after payment to let them know you have shipped.

I recommend modifying your shipping charge section in Preferences to NOT let your buyer modify the shipping total. Many will, and send you less than they needed to. That way you can bill them the correct amount.

One caveat to heed: when you quote a shipping price in your auction, it is BINDING. Even if the new Royal Mail prices are more than you quoted, you can only ask for the amount in your auction listing. If you ask for more, you can be reported to eBay, and they may give you the boot - for life. Please calculate your shipping quotes carefully! You must eat your mistakes, and it can be costly.

And one last thing: if you have a Personal PayPal account, you will need to upgrade to a Premier or Business one to take credit card payments. Sure, it costs a little more in money-receipt fees, but it's the PayPal regulations, and many buyers will use only credit cards to pay.

I've gone on long enough! If there's anything else you're unclear about, come over to the AC and let the AC regulars help you some more. Don't go to Live Help, AC regulars call them Live Helpless for a reason.
