I have been reviewing the seating plan for the flight we are taking.
Are the unavailable seats a good indication of the fill of the plane to date.
I know that certain seats are not available, ie exit seats. Are there many unassigned seats. I would just be interested to know how quick the flights fill.

I think it's been said on here before that about 60% of the seats are normally released for pre-booking / pre-assignment. The remainder (including exit rows) are only allocated very close to departure / at check-in.
So if you see a seat plan with most of the seats available, then the flight could have a light load. If about 60% show as occupied, then it could be full.

Does anybody know if the front three rows of economy, on the LGW/MAN 747s, in the little mini cabin are released before check in?

The front section is usually greyed out until 24 hours before. I've grabbed seats at on-line check in on a couple of occasions.

AFAIK the first row of the "mini cabin" as you say will not be released for pre-selection as it is classed as a Bulk Head seat and these are only available for allocation at proper check (not OLCI), the other rows however should be released for pre-selection (although as mentioned above by Kracken only 60% of the seats are available before OLCI)

Sorry should have made it more clear, as Neil has said, not the bulkhead row. - row 21.
The other rows, 22, 23 and sometimes a row 24 are released at OLCI. I have never seen them available for allocation before that, and would imagine that they are some of the percentage that they hold back.

As others have said, the front 3 rows of Economy on a LGW/MAN 747 are normally only allocated at check-in (or OLCI if you are very lucky). The only time I have been pre-allocated a seat in these rows way in advance was with help from a friend at VS.
