I'm looking at trying to make it from the 12:10pm lunchtime VS arrival at JFK over to EWR to catch an internal US flight that departs at 15:25pm - is that a sensible connection to try and make on a weekday (week after next)? The next internal flight doesn't go until 8pm.[:#]

Common sense (and so do I) says that you should get on a flight to EWR instead of JFK. Remember you've got to give yourself plenty of time in case your outbound flight is delayed for whatever reason, and also to get across the city too. VS will probably not offer a refund if you miss the connecting flight and will point out to you that they were only liable to get you from LHR to JFK.

But the final decision is up to you, that's just my opinion.

If you misconnect, or in this case, as it's not a through ticket, in the eyes of the onward airline, you're just late getting to EWR for your onward flight, most US airlines are fairly grown up about letting you go on a later flight, usually you just have to go standby on the later flight, or pay a modest change fee.

Most US domestic tickets I've bought don't seem to implode when you miss your flight.

The earliest flight into EWR gets in at 18:40 with the connecting flight leaving some 80 minutes later... So getting a flight to EWR may actually be worse.

I guess my real question is that if I get in roughly on time to JFK at about 12:15-12:30, do I stand a reasonable chance of getting across to EWR to make a 15:25 connection?

Transfer time should be around 80-90 minutes unless traffic is really bad - although that would seem less likely in the middle of the day.

So I guess if you allow 40 minutes for arrival formalities you are looking at getting to EWR around 14:15. I don't tend to arrive at JFK at this time so cannot comment on whether 40 minutes seems reasonable - I guess whether you are flying up front will play a part.

I usualy reckon on 2.5 hours from landing in JFK to getting to the Jersey shore...EWR is a bit closer but it would be tight.

Have you thought about the 10:20 Continental flight from LGW to EWR codeshare with VS. That would be much more relaxing.

The Jersey shore, depending on where you go, is pretty far away from EWR.

In any case, it basically depends on traffic. Because it's a weekday, rush hour should always be taken into consideration. However from 12-3 I would assume most people would still be in work, perhaps out to lunch, but not so much to cause a major disruption. Now, I just did a quick search on MapQuest, and they have a route that they say will get you there in 51 minutes (this does not include variables like traffic and accidents along the way, obviously). Personally, I wouldn't risk it, however I must ask, which airline are you transferring to at EWR? If it is through CO, be very aware that as EWR is CO's hub, terminal C tends to get a bit, well...messy. Basically, if you haven't been there before, flights are bundled into lines, so you could be forced to wait with people going on up to 5 different flights. As Cherimoya suggested, you might want to simply consider CO from LGW. There's probably nothing worse than getting stuck in mid-connection.

Well most airlines have a 'flat tire' policy which basically says they will let you fly standby on a later flight fee free. Now if you have a non-refundable/changable ticket you maybe SOL if you turn up after your flight check in closes; say 30 minutes prior.

"What I cannot get on my flight! The cabby got a flat tire (pulled over by the police) and I was delayed. I planned on being here 120 minutes early. Is there anything you can do to help (looking all disstressed)?"

I have never pulled this line.

Also there are shuttles from JFK to EWR (and everother NYC area airport). A bunch of them. Shuttle List (Mid Page, Heading 'From JFK to EWR')

Personally I would fly jetBlue from JFK to where ever you maybe going and skip the VS/CO miles as the fare maybe just fairer. And they have XM radio and Satelite TV And do not overbook.
