Virgin announces approval for Sydney

Virgin Atlantic Airways today announced that it is to launch daily scheduled services between London and Sydney via Hong Kong. The service will be operated by an Airbus A340-600 aircraft and will commence on 7 December this year. The A340-600 is the longest plane in the world and in future years this will be replaced on the route by the Airbus A380, the biggest plane in the world.

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic said:

“I am delighted that Virgin Atlantic is now able to offer flights to Australia – everyone at Virgin has long wished for us to operate to Australia and today’s announcement really is a dream come true. Australians have also been waiting for many years for the BA-Qantas duopoly to be broken and for new competition to be introduced.

“Today’s announcement is another major landmark in Virgin Atlantic’s development. Sydney is a prestigious route and will become our 23rd destination. Tomorrow is also the 20th anniversary of our very first flight from Gatwick to Newark in 1984. Australia is a country that everyone at Virgin has been hoping to fly to from those early days and the news that our ambitions have become a reality will really add to our celebrations!

“I am grateful to the British and Hong Kong governments who have brokered this pro-competition deal that enables us to launch these new services. I’d also like to thank the Honourable Joe Hockey, Australia’s Minister for Tourism, for all his help and support.

“Virgin Atlantic’s new services on the kangaroo route will be good news for consumers in the UK, Hong Kong and Australia, as it will mean that much needed competition and choice is brought to these markets. I am sure that Virgin’s award winning service and innovative products will be well received both in the UK-Australia and Hong Kong-Australia markets.”

Mackenzie Grant, Head of Asia Pacific for Virgin Atlantic Airways, said:

“I would like to thank all the government and airport agencies in Hong Kong, Australia and the UK who helped us fulfil our dream to operate to Australia and I am particularly pleased that we will be able to offer our award winning service on this route. We will offer Virgin’s new Upper Class suite which consists of a reclining leather seat for take off, a place to sit and eat a meal opposite your partner, the biggest fully flat bed in business class with a proper mattress for sleeping on, a private onboard bar to drink at with your friends and an inflight beauty treatment area. Also included in the price of a Virgin Upper Class ticket are four chauffeur driven journeys to and from the airport at both ends of the route.”

Tickets will go on sale for the new services later in the summer. Details of introductory promotional offers will also be announced at that time.

Sydney will bring the total number of destinations served by Virgin Atlantic to 23. In addition to this route, Virgin recently announced that it is due to launch a number of new routes including Cuba and The Bahamas and an increase in services to the US, Caribbean, Asia and the Far East.

Hurrah! for that! I have so wanted to go to Oz with VA, and now we can!! Something to be saving those miles for, isnt it?

I am also looking forward to finding out the Mileage and Tier points accrued. The mileage alone has got to be amazing as from LHR to HKK its 14,925 FFM so i think we are easily looking at 30,000 miles for an Economy trip? Just think how many that would be in UC?

I hope this doesnt start changes in the FC in regard to amount of tier points for each level and rewards, because if you only took one flight in Y or W to SYD you would have enough miles straight away for a great reward.

fantastic news :)

As posted in another thread, I understand that a new clubhouse is to be built in Hong Kong to facilitate the route.

Does anyone know if/when a clubhouse will be built at SYD.

Also, will they use the Virgin Blue terminal, or the other one?

Highflyer - guessing that FC is about loyalty and mileage is about distance. So the fact that someone's journey requires them to fly half way round the world should benefit them from a mileage perspective but not from a loyalty perspective. So TPs may stay as is. As you point out though at 30,000 for Y that'd be 67,500 for Au UC. Nearly enough for a US UC flight :)

On singapore airlines the flight from LHR to SYD would yield four lots of tps for the 4 separate legs ie 20 in J and 28 in first.

Does this mean they will increase the TP needed to move up levels?

Thanks Decker

I do wonder though, because you could buy (for example) LHR to HKK and get 6 TPS in PE, then surely get HKK to SYD in PE for another 6 TPS if you were departing a few days later. If they do indeed do this, they surely must give double TPS on LHR-HKK-SYD otherwise true FC fans would stay in HKK overnight to bag the extra TPS.

I hope that you do get more TPS, but i hope that the TPS needed for each level doesnt change.

All the other FF programmes I have looked into give you more tps in some form for the longer flights.

Given the "dual leg" scenario greater TPs seem fair. If there is no possibility of separate flights then it doesn't. But TPs for East and West Coast USA are the same which given the mileage difference.... if the dual leg scenario were correct when Virgin US kicks off you could theoretically fly to the East Coast and xfer to a domestic to get to the West Coast. Perhaps then West Coast TPs would up? :)

How does virgin FC compare to other airlines Gold Tier?
I like the fact the number of TP reduces to retain a level than to earn it..
I only know of Virgin who do this

Im guessing the shortest VS route is Lagos?
My (status match) Prem exec on united requires 50k year on year to maintain

VS require 30 TP = 7.5 roundtrips * 8167 (lon-Lagos)=61k im sure someone will point out the most efficient way to retain au on VS!!

I fly the US a lot anyway so I guess millage isnt the best indicator of loyalty.

The easiest way to get tier points is to fly SIN-KUL return in First Class on SQ. 10 tier points for £160. That's Gold for £640. Of course, there's the matter of getting to SIN, but if you are on a RTW and want to build up your tier points then it is possible.

Has anyone done this ie got GOLD through this route seems too good to be true!
I was looking at £1800 for a Z UC BOS flight for only 10TP

hmm even if it costs £500+ to get to asia its worth it!

According to today's Times Travel Supplement (sorry don't know how to do links yet[:I]) VS Tickets have just gone on sale for the Sydney route with lead in fares of £717 + tax

The articel It also refers to an Australian budget airline starting up - "Backpackers Express" with plans to start up in the autumn from Manchester and Munich.

I know who i will opt for.

I searched for flights to Sydney today on the VS wesbite and got VS501/523 out via KUL and VS522/VS502 back - operated by Malaysia Airlines. 3 choices of fare econ, business and first - no PE or UC.

Business fare for the dates I chose next March was £3705 with only 6159 FC miles. First class was £6535 and the site says this fare doesn't qualify for flying club miles.

Am I missing something? If the seats are on sale for the new route, where are they[?][?]

PS - ebookers came up with the same flights

These are code share flights VIA KUL with MAS not the VS service via HKG.The VS flights are not loaded onto the systems yet.
