I couldn't resist the stateside UC deals over Christmas so the GF & I are travelling to YVR for some skiing (via LAX on VS) on 22 Dec. We have a stopover at LA on the way there and I'm looking for suggestions on where to stay.

On the few occasions I've stayed in LA I've stayed at the Beverly Wilshire, but as I'm flying straight out the next morning and don't intend to do anything other than rest I was wondering about ideas around LAX itself.

Around LAX itself there is not a lot to do.
The LAX hilton is quite nice (if you have hilton gold/diamond staus) you should get lounge access and they have a good fitness center and swimming pool.

There is a HGI EL Segundo which gets goo rarings and I think is close to the beach area ( although there is a power plant? IIRC and the beach will be under the departure flight path

I was thinking of doing this rout at New year ( but as there is a 3 hour gap between VS 7 arriving and an AC flight to YVR I will probably just transfer rather than overnighting at LAX)

From my experience, I'd go for the LAX Hilton - probably wouldn't go for the Wiltshire on such a short stay myself.

THe LAX Hilton would be a good choice. You can always hire a car if you want to and take a drive along the coast for dinner in Malibu. You'll be back in time for a good night's sleep.

Me thinks HL would need to abandon the wheels in Malibu or (DARE I suggest) get the GF to drive back as I don't see him doing din dins without the appropriate bott or three of vino!

There is a Westin at LAX that is kind of nice,also there is a Ritz at Marina Del Rey.

We stayed at the RC Marina Del Rey couple of Xmas's ago it was very good and only about 10 minutes from LAX,go for a club room they were very free with the Louis Roeder all day in the lounge.All very festive.

Stupid question here, but we've never actually managed to find any sort of centre in Malibu other than the reidential area - any directions preferrably coming from Santa Monica would be great:D[:I]

There isn't a "centre" actually; Malibu is a collection of traffic intersections actually. Most of the commercial aspect of Malibu is in the Cross Creek shopping plaza; everything else is either on the beach or hidden away up in the hills overlooking the ocean.

Well there is a bit of a logistics story on this one. As well as LAX, I will have another connection to make at YVR too. If I'd taken the earlier VS7, I'd not do any work that day and therefore make no $$$'s! The later VS23 means I can leverage out enough hours to constitute a full day, especially as on the last working day before Christmas everyone disappears around midday anyway. Alternatives were to do SFO on the Saturday, but this was not available at the £1,600 bargain price.

As always, it's a juggle between the cost of the flight and maximising my income
