Welcome to the forum, blackpoolowl.
I think the best advice I can give you is to have a tour round this site and the VS site
http://www.virgin-atlantic.com .
On both sites you will find a whole host of ways of earning points to supplement your annual flight. The quickest way is by way of the Flying Club version of the Virgin Credit Card
http://uk.virginmoney.com/vaa-credit-card/There are lots of other ways including hotels, car hire, wine etc. etc.
As jilly has said, you can still get points for flights that have been completed. I think this is limited to travel in the past six months though.
With VS the bulk of economy flight qualify for miles, but some of the really cheap fare classes, such as N and X don't.
See here for explanation of fare classes
http://www.v-flyer.com/codes.aspWe are a very helpful lot here, and I think you will find that - if you ask specific questions about things you are not sure of, then you will get a positive response.
