G to Oz

Trying to work out G class availability to SYD toward the end of the year. Whilst the VS website will let me check for seperate LHR-HKG, HKG-SYD and return legs, it tells me that LHR-SYD is 'not available for redemption bookings' at the moment. Rather than spending ages on the phone to FC, am I safe in assuming that G availability for LHR-HKG-SYD is the same as LHR-SYD?

Nope, the leg you are probably having problems with is the LHR - HKG where G's are very hard to get.

Dave, your reply doesn't make sense. If LHR-HKG shows as avilable for G AND HKG-SYD available for G then why wouldn't LHR-SYD be available?
My gut feeling is YES, but you may well have to book the legs individually. Is there any difference between LHR-HKG + HKG-SYD mileage redemption rather than LHR-SYD?

I have a pair of G's booked from SYD to LHR for this June. FC told me that SYD - LHR wasn't available. Closer inspection on Va.com showed availability on both legs (SYD-HKG and HKG-LHR) so I called back and booked them seperately.
Upon questioning the premier agent, the agent couldn't give me any answer for why I couldn't book SYD-LHR but could book them individually....[?]
Still no wiser today unfortunately. It did leave me with a clear message - don't rely on Premier. All the info is on the website so check the dates yourself.
I booked 7 months in advance and found the only day in June that had 2 G's left from HKG-LHR. I would have missed out potentially if I hadn't checked myself...[n]

As LHRHKG and HKGSYD are treated as two separate flights, and there is a possibility that some may want only one portion of these, there are separate availabilities for this, usually in the viscinity of 2 seats per flight but this DOES vary (and some flights may not have any G seats available at all if it is expected to be busy) and then the LHRSYD is treated as a separate entity. The LHRSYD usually only has one G seats available (if any) so its always worth checking the separate flights. If you book them separately, it is usually easier if you need to make changes, or decide later to have a stopover in either direction.

Absolutely correct - LHR-HKG and HKG-SYD have their own allocation of G's.. and yes, the LHR-HKG sector is very popular indeed, and G seats are hard to come by. I've had to book exactly 336 days in advance to get them. [Me and Mrs McCoy are off to Oz on 28 Dec 2007.

Juliet and McCoy worded it better than I did, the LHR - SYD flight is just a major pain in the butt to book online, you are far better off enduring the phone call to FC and let them find the dates that are open for both legs.

OK. Thanks one and all. More or less what I'd presumed, but always nice to check with you sage and wise types.
Now the only other problem is working out the best/cheapest way to include mdvipond jr. in our plans (now that the little blighter needs a seat to herself) - do we pay full miles for her (assuming that this means doling out adult miles for a child) or try and find a Z fare (assuming that this would be 75% of an adult fare)? Or use a companion ticket? Or buy W and upgrade with miles? Christ, I think I'm starting with a migrane...

Well seeing as the OP has taken this OT.
That's nothing, my mom used to mail us, sit in a box for two weeks with a couple of packs of crisps and some lemonade, take the Geest boat to St Lucia.
Only half a lie as well [:0]
On the mdvipond jr issue, sorry but it is UC for her, the pic's of her in the suite are to darn cute and let's face it, could she really turn right after so many trips turning left [?]

You're absolutely right. No concentration, that's always been my problem.
And you may have an interesting solution there, we could always send her ahead by DHL. No, I think you're right, we've already made the rod for our own back by letting her fly UC in the first place. Mind you, 'cute' payeth not a J class fare...
Back somewhere near my original query, the favoured solution at the moment would be to try and bag G for Mrs. mdvipond and I, then stump up for 75% of a Z fare for jr. Just seems a shame that VS don't do kids' rates when spending miles.

Going with a W then using miles to up grade wouldn't work better ?
edit: I will leave my post where it is just as a pointer.
Of course jr is to young for an FC account, though with the amount of UC flying she does..come on VS, make an exception [y]

if you upgrade from Y or W with miles, remember the T&Cs show an adult fare needs to be paid in order to upgrade with miles.
