APD - Pay on the day

Hello all
Has anyone paid the increased APD at the airport and still been given the discount voucher towards another flight ?
The Virgin Atlantic website infers the voucher is for advanced payment of the extra APD only.
If so, I could use my Virgin Amex card without incurring the paypal dollar conversion fee.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE PAYING WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS CARDS
Virgin passengers will be unable to use their American Express Cards online at http://www.virginatlantic.com/greenorbrown to pay any outstanding Air Passenger Duty. Virgin passengers who wish to use their American Express Card to pay the additional duty can do so when they arrive at the airport.
Looks like I will be paying at check-in

Surely if you have booked and paid for a ticket, thats it.
After all if you want to change certain tickets VS charge you for doing so!
It's all take, take.

The problem is, as has been discussed in other threads, that APD is a duty levied by the government not by the airlines. It has been applied retrospectively by the government but it is the airline that has the responsibility of collecting it.

If we use the Virgin Atlantic AMEX card to pay on the day (as Virgin now say we can do) will we still get the discount voucher ?

I doubt you will get the discount voucher if paying on the day with AMEX. The reason for the discount voucher is to encourage people to pay before travel rather than causing chaos at check-in.
I have paid my APD using my other credit card. I just have to for go the £20 worth of miles to save myself and other people the hassle of paying on the day.

The voucher is the airline's way of encouraging people to pre-pay and avoid as much chaos at the airport as possible. There have been some occasions where the staff at the airport have given out vouchers to those paying on the day however this shouldn't be happening so there's a pretty good chance you won't see it happen again.
By paying well in advance it saves so much time when you get to check in with your receipt in hand - green sticker and straight through rather than a wait that could be rather long. The queues each morning at LGW are still pretty massive for all airlines, given they are also still trying to sort out the cabin luggage/liquids restrictions.

Honey Lamb, as stated before, it is indeed a tax on the airline,NOT the passenger, so the airline DOES NOT HAVE TO COLLECT IT, they just have to pay it!! and on the same thread, how come fuel is the lowest it has been for 9 months, but the fuel levy is still being applied? [n][:?]

At the end of the day, it is just like any other company, they pass their costs onto the consumers.

It isn't taking any longer in my opinion - the transaction for the APD is done alongside the regular check in transaction. I've not had to wait for anyone who hasn't paid!
But it is still best to pay in advance!!
But in answer to the OP, no, you wont get a voucher if you pay on the day. Anyone who has been given one on the day for not paying in advance was very lucky!

Yeah, but the simple point is WHEN will we see the fuel surcharge removed or reduced?
Or the next time there is a fuel surcharge levied we will technically be paying two fuel levies and VA will be paying the same for fuel as they did when they implemented the first surcharge?
Certainly fuel prices have fallen dramatically, but we have not seen any reduction in fares to compensate?

About the APD, I go in 25 days to MCO, there will be five of us, I have had no notification abouts paying. I booked last June(06). Any advice about what I could do? (Polite answers only please)OH and is anyone clear if this charge is actually legal yet.

Did you book with VH by any chance? If so, they will absorb the cost for you...
If not you should have to pay...

They wont, as you only pay APD on flights departing the UK.

Yes, but I understand that it's a tax imposed on the airlines, who have chosen to pass it on....

It's all gone rather quiet with regards to the legality of this charge. The last I heard was that a legal challenge was being mounted - that was a couple of weeks ago.
