You can already send emails and SMS text messages on V-Port aircraft.

Rememeber to note down those phone numbers before take off as you cant turn your phone on mid flight to get your mates number from your mobile!!

A lot of mobile phones offer a Radio off option these days so you can use the phones other functions in flight..

Probably safe to assume you'll be pounced on and I'm guessing a lot of FAs will follow a "better safe than sorry" course on this.

Declan,

such a good point! Like so many people I've given up memorising numbers, there just all in my phone. Several times I've been about to send an SMS from 37,000' and then realised that I have no idea what numbers to use. They're all safely on my (turned-off) phone.

I think there is no consensus on this one. I think it was Declan who posted some time ago that they were not FAA/CAA approved so should not be used even where you have a Phone Off / Bluetooth Off function.

A lot will depend on the FA's if they ask you to turn it off then you should oblige, having said that I used my P900 on my last four VA flights in full view of the FA's with no problem. On LGW-LAS I even showed the FSM (new terminology :)) the cached pages of the V-Mobile seat maps ;) she was most impressed!

You should also consider the "me too" syndrome if others without the ability to turn off the "phone" function see you using yours they might try to use their's aswell, FA's have to be mindful off this I am sure.

My P800 actually calls it 'flight mode'

Upgrade to P900 due soon. Well as soon as I can distract Mrs Pat!

ITS VAA policy that all mobile phones remain switched off for the duration of the flight.

Even if your phone is in flight mode it must be turned off, crew will tell you to turn it off.

VAA do not allow these phones to be used.

Anyone can start saying the phone is in flight mode and then who do you beleive so its simpler to say phones off!!

Its only for a maximum of 12 hours flying for goodness sake, so put your phone away and play with the IFE!!!!!!!

Do you mean V-Mobile or V-Flyer?

Emirates have just launched wireless internet and email on certain routes and on certain A/C and the way it reads it sounds similar to V:Port as it mentions the use of SMS.

Full story here

I'm sure I read somewhere that V:Port does have similar options available for future use.

I wonder how many hits V-Flyer would get from the air! I think live seat ratings would certainly be interesting ;)

And about texting people, the safest way is to back up your numbers to your laptop using the IR port and software that most fancy phones provide (a good idea anyway...) and get your numbers off your laptop in flight, the FA's cant say anything about that! :D
