Several VX Rivals Slash Fares

As we expected, the arrival of VX has caused some of its rivals to cut their fares by as much as 52% in some markets.

My First Class Flyer August newsletter is headlined "New Domestic Carrier Starts Fare War". Among the not so startling developments reported:

AA, DL and NW have lowered fares in the NYC-LAX market; Continental, US Airways and United have not.

AA and NW have cut NYC-SFO fares by 52%!

And in a move that is bound to be good for air travel, AA has dropped its LAX-SFO fare from $281 return to $149.

The article also discusses the new VX "F" seating, saying it appears to be better than other domestic carrier's international seating. Ouch[B)].

If they like the seats wait until they see the entertainment system!

UA did about 2 weeks ago, Chuck. There was a huge thread on FT the day after VX started selling tickets.

We should not forget, amongst all this euphoria that the prices VX are currently offering are promotional prices not their regular prices, so we should expect to see VX fares increasing at some stage.

Yea. I bought then refunded a $148.80 all in IAD-SFO-IAD trip. Silly Ben...

I don't think this is just about fares though.... I hope that what VA do (IFE, etc) is rolled out across VS

I can't see AA, CO and UA making as much investment quickly given that many still aren't anywhere near as profitable as they used to be

Yes, these are promotional fares. But, as to wobbledog's point something tells me that folks will be willing to pay even more for great service, entertainment and those way, way out "F" seats!
