UC British Menu - ugh!

I've been flying very regularly lately, and i was horrified by the appearance of the new UC Great British Menu on a flight out to IAD this week. I remembered the food served up on 4 trips last Autumn under this menu, all of which was truly awful. And true to form, it was awful again on this trip.

It's enough to make me switch to BA.. [:#]

Well, if it's the same on as Decker reported here I think it sounds rather good

I have to say, I'm not a fan of it at all.

It just sounds to me that Virgin never listen to their customers about anything at all!

Looks like what I had on my last VS trip...

I think the real issue is that the "Best of British" theme for the entire menu makes things a bit limiting, in terms of offering a variety of things on board. I have slight misgivings for exactly that reason. I'd probably end up with the chicken or just the pie with no 'slop' on the side.

Look at it this way, Best of British can't last forever, can it?

Also, it seems that they are changing the J menu (and I think W, too) over regularly, every 3 months now.

How's the inbound food from IAD been? Better or worse, in your opinion?

I had the new menu on my way to LAX, and actually quite enjoyed it. The pie was very good, and the mushy peas and mashed potato went very well with it!

To be fair to BA there were other mains on the menu(a Shaun Hill veal dish,Lobster and chicken salad[:$]and a very nice plate of steamed cod) but having lived on noodles for a few days a meat pie was what I needed[y]

On the four flights I took over the "summer" the UC menu was actually pretty good; not without complaints but the food was definitely acceptable:)

Unfortunately, I've sampled the new "outbound to US" menu on VS19 today, and I wasn't particularly impressed, sadly.

I found the Square Pie pretty dull and tasteless.

The profiteroles contained mostly air, and a tiny spot of cream.

The additions on the longer flights are the "lighter bites":

Mini beef burger on some sort of froo-froo bread roll
Mini vegetable Cornish Pasties
Chicken Tikka with cucumber raita and rocket (served cold, was like "rubber chicken")

However, it wasn't brilliant, and I might have been better off with the roast chicken instead.

Hmmm...can you find anything good here:

Starters
Smoked Haddock PatŽ served with black pepper oatcakes.
Mild spiced butternut squash soup served with a choice of warm breads

Main Courses
Roast Chicken Breast with sage & thyme stuffing served with autumn greens, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and Somerset cider sauce
The Square Pie Company steakand mushroom pie served with mushy peas, mashed potato and gravy
Autumn vegetable stew served with dumplings and hazlenuts

Cheese
Coastal Cheddar
Somerset rustic
Cropwell Bishop Stilton

If you're a vegetarian that means soup..and then stew. It was the worst stew I've ever had... Next 5 flights now booked all on BA...

Browsing through http://www.airlinemeals.net reveals an astonishing variety of menu choices - perhaps someone at VS should peruse that site for new inspiration.
Even a lot of the economy meals on CX for exmaple look better than VS's UC offering..:

As I, in Jeremy Clarkson's words, am a "vegetablist" it is often difficult to find a good menu. In this case: soup[y], stew[n]

I thought the stew sounded a bit grim, too. My veggie friend thankfully could escape with the veggie Cornish Pasties on VS19.

(Also, he'd ordered a lacto-ovo meal, and it wasn't provided, which meant he got short changed on the afternoon tea service, as the sandwiches were "mixed" with three tiny triangles of ham, prawn and egg and cress (bleeegh). He'd have ended up with a tiny triangle of egg and cress.)

The question is, what would you like?

Something like a simple fresh pasta dish? A "dinner" salad?
