Actual flight times

Is there anywhere you can see the actual flight times for given routes?

The question came up the day when looking on a route (it was LHR->DXB) and it looked like it would unlikely to get an upgrade from PE to US as UC was showing full.

The discussion was about how many hours on the aircraft vs number of miles to upgrade.

Clearly if the flight is day or night makes a big difference, however as some flights are much longer than others the value of a 20,000 PE to UC can be quite different.

The actual flight times are quoted when you book online with VS.

Just do some dummy bookings. You need to click the flight number under the price matrix grid and a pop-up shows you flight times and A/C type.

Try a dummy booking on the VS Web site or any other like Expedia - it'll give you the scheduled duration.

It was the 'real' flight time rather than the scheduled/estiamte flight time I was looking for.

The real flight time varies from day to day depending on what route and height atc give the a/c and various wind-speeds. For example i've done LAX in 10 hrs one week, then 11 hrs 45 the week after!

What I was looking for is is there any easy way of looking up the actually flying time for a specific route is?

So over the last 2 weeks LAX to LHR has taken xx hours/minutes?

1. Go to the Virgin Atlantic website and click on flight times.

2. Under date, put in the flight number you are interested in and yesterday's date. Click on check status.

3. You can then check the actual departure time and actual arrival time. One less the other (plus or minus any time difference) is your actual flight time.

4. To check earlier dates change the date on the browser address bar and press enter or click on go to. You need to look for flightDate=. For example, flightDate=2008:04:01, will give you details for 1st April. Make sure you only change the date and leave the rest of address.

5. To check a fortnight's worth of flights you will need to repeat the above 14 times

I believe you can go back a year or more.

You can also look at flightaware.com, but you'll have to become a registered user (free, though) to see any more than a day or two's history.

That is mostly US centric, but they've recently done an upgrade, and while it doesn't do live tracking aircraft outside of North America, it is starting to become aware of flights elsewhere in the world and when they take off and land.

There's also a load of other stuff on there, but it's probably only relevant to an aviation propeller head.

Another good site to try is http://www.flightstats.com , no need to register and also has good coverage of UK and Europe.

Ok got the info I was trying to find from flightstats.com.

What I wanted to know was how long the VS401 was really but I have also discovered it seems to be late arriving in LHR often (well last 2 days anyway).

I am (was) planning on connecting from VS401 to VS23 on Friday which now looks rather tight!
